After starting the 2014 fantasy baseball season on the disabled list, Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco went undrafted in the majority of fantasy formats. Most fans completely wrote him off the youngster and went with a more veteran option behind the plate, like Wilson Ramos or Russell Martin.

However, Mesoraco started hitting for power right when he came off the shelf. The catcher homered in three of his first five games of the season and racked up seven RBIs. He instantly looked like an elite power-hitting catcher and his ownership skyrocketed around the fantasy community.

In total 114 games, Mesoraco shocked the world by blasting 25 home runs. He added 81 RBIs and an impressive .359 On Base Percentage. He even had a solid average in 2014, as he posted a .273 batting average to go along with .359 On Base Percentage.

Even though he missed a good chunk of time, Meso was first among catchers in homers (25), first in Slugging Percentage (.534), second in RBIs (80) and second in Wins Above Replacement (4.8). He quietly outperformed almost every other backstop in fantasy.

Meso isn’t the flashiest option or the most popular, but he will come much cheaper than Buster Posey and Yadier Molina. He will be worth targeting inside the top-five backstops this spring and will provide some much needed pop to the catcher position.
