Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge: Don’t Draft QB Matthew Stafford

Quarterback Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions has been an utter disappointment this fantasy football season. He was drafted as a top-five QB in many formats, but he has consistently turned the ball over and the veteran was simply unable to match his numbers from 2013.

In 16 games this season, Stafford had eight games in which he finished with one pass touchdown or less. He also had only four 300-yard contests on the season. Stafford’s 4,257 passing yards were his lowest total since taking over as a starter, and his 20 touchdown passes were a fry cry from the 41 TDs he threw in 2011.

Sure, the injuries to WR Calvin Johnson and RB Reggie Bush hindered the production of the offense, but Stafford looked absolutely inept without the two stars on the field and constantly underachieved for fantasy owners on a weekly basis. By the end of the season, he wasn’t a reliable starting option.

Detroit was luckily able to take advantage of a lackluster schedule towards the conclusion of the regular season, as they closed out the final six games against five teams that were well under .500. They practically snuck into the playoffs, and considering they face a red-hot Dallas Cowboys team in the Wild Card, the likelihood of Detroit moving on this postseason is rather slim.

Detroit will likely bow out of the playoffs in the first round, thus limiting the overall fantasy value of everyone on their team. Stafford will likely throw a TD or two in the game for fantasy owners, but don’t count on him being there in the next round.
