NBA FanDuel Strategy: 5 SFs Only Worth Playing In GPP Format

NBA FanDuel Strategy: 5 SFs Only Worth Playing In GPP Format

When playing NBA FanDuel, there are typically two strategies to use building lineups. You are either making one taking the least risk you can for cash games (non-tournaments) where 285 will sweep most nights, or you are building a risky lineup that could hit 350 if all breaks incredibly right. Rarely are players fit for both these scenarios, however. Here's a look at five SFs to only play in GPP when you can take the risk on any given night.

5. Corey Brewer - Houston Rockets

Corey Brewer was a cash game and GPP darling with the Minnesota Timberwolves all season, as the team was riddled with injuries and lacked any dominant scoring options. However, once he was traded to the Houston Rockets who have the best scorer of the ball in the world in James Harden, Brewer's fantasy appeal deflated quickly. He can still go off any given game, but he is not going to see 30-plus minutes often in Houston.

Gerald Green and teammate P.J. Tucker are interesting (cheap) options for GPP purposes, in particular during games when the Phoenix Suns play against teams that have good defenders at the point and SG and need scoring from the wing to alleviate pressure off of Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe. However, they are nearly impossible to trust in cash games due to 10-15 point floors.

3. Mike Dunleavy - Chicago Bulls

Mike Dunleavy is currently out with a sprained ankle, but he typically starts for the Chicago Bulls. This often tricks some FanDuel players into thinking he's a safe cash game option at SF considering the position is weak many nights and he is cheap. This idea is painfully shortsighted at best, lacking in any applied analysis -- as well as simply a farce. He's good on the glass but not a consistent enough scorer for cash games.

2. Josh Smith - Houston Rockets

Josh Smith is a hot topic in NBA circles lately, but for all the wrong reasons. Since being released by the Detroit Pistons, the team went on a 7-0 run after playing a brand of putrid basketball all season with him. Now with the Houston Rockets, there is no doubt that Smith will still have huge fantasy outings occasionally, but Houston is in no need for him to carry the team with big scoring performances, making him a risky play in cash games.

Perhaps this is not a choice that the masses will agree with, but I firmly believe that you only use Rudy Gay in GPP only unless DeMarcus Cousins is out for the Sacramento Kings and they need Gay to pick up the scoring slack. Otherwise, he is very streaky and could accumulate less than 20 fantasy points one game and explode with a 50 fantasy point performance the next. This simply screams 'GPP only' to those who are paying attention.
