Fantasy Baseball 2015 Bust Candidate: SS Troy Tulowitzki

The fantasy baseball season is about two months away. Every owner is looking for sleepers and players with late-round value. However, owners are also looking to avoid players who may plague their team. Troy Tulowitzki is ranked as the league’s best shortstop, but with the lack of health over the past few years, should you draft him?

Tulowitzki played in 47, 126 and 91 games over the last three seasons. His most games played were 155 in 2007. Being constantly injured does not help Tulowitzki’s value for fantasy owners over the course of a full season.

Granted, Tulowitzki is one of the best when he does play. In his 91 games played in 2014, he hit 21 home runs, drove in 52 RBIs, and put up .340/.432 OBP split. Tulowitzki is one of the few players that can help fantasy owners fill the stat sheets. However, with the lack of ability to play a full season, he should be left off of everyone’s radar. He is a big name, but the cost is much bigger.

In standard drafts, you will likely have to spend a second-round pick. In auction drafts, you may spend upwards of $40 on a $200 budget. That is just too much to invest on a player who may play half the season at most. While the shortstop position is shallow, there is enough value late to avoid Tulowitzki. Young players like Xander Bogaerts or Starlin Castro could be had much later in drafts.

Tulowitzki is 30 years old and not getting any younger. Just like with other older or injury-prone players, there comes a time when the name holds more value than the actual player. Avoid Tulowitzki at all costs.
