With all due respect to the Sony Open and the Humana Challenge, this weekend’s Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona is the beginning officially marks the beginning of the PGA Tour season to me. Bubba Watson, who didn’t play in the last two tournaments, has to enter as the favorite to win the tournament, and one of the favorites to add another major championship to his resume. The World Golf Rankings may say that Rory McIlroy is the best player in the world, but I’m here to say that Watson is the best in the business.
Watson is the top-ranked American at No. 4 in the world, and over the past few years, he has turned into a threat in every tournament he enters. Watson has already played in three tournaments this season, and he has finished in first, 10th and 11th. That’s not too bad for your first three tournaments of the season.
In 2014, Watson had his best season as a professional. To go along with his second Masters victory, he added another win at the Northern Trust Open, as well as eight top-10 finishes. Out of his 21 events, Watson finished inside the top 30 14 times. This can be attributed to his ability to hit the long ball. Last season, Watson ranked first in total driving. While he just finished out of the top 100 in driving accuracy, he led the tour is driving distance.
But perhaps the best reason why we have seen the rise of Watson is that his putting was incredible last season. His long-drive ability, combined with his uncanny ability to maneuver and shape his shots better than any player in the game always seem to put him in good position. He ranked in the top 25 in GIR in 2014 and top 10 in putting.
If the beginning of the season is any indicator of what the rest of the year could be like for Watson, then he could quite possibly be the best player in the world come September.
