New Orleans Pelicans guard Eric Gordon missed 21 games with a left shoulder injury, and since returning to action on Jan. 5 he is averaging 14.6 points, 4.8 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game (12 games), while making close to 43 percent of his three-pointers. That includes a nine-game stretch, prior to the last two games, where he averaged 16.3 points per game and had 20 or more points three times.
Should Gordon now be back on the radar of fantasy basketball owners?
The Pelicans will be without point guard Jrue Holiday for at least the next few weeks, after he was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right leg last week. He missed significant time last season with a fractured right tibia, so a return in 2-4 weeks can’t be guaranteed. Gordon is among the potential beneficiaries in terms of playing time, as long as he himself stays healthy.
Gordon’s fantasy value hinges on his health and scoring, and we may already be seeing the start of a downward trend in the latter since he has just 22 points over the last two games. It should be noted he only played 25 minutes in the Pelicans’ 25-point win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night, after playing at least 32 minutes in 10 of the previous 11 games, but Gordon needs to turn things up again scoring-wise to prove he can be a noteworthy producer for fantasy owners over the rest of the season.
Regardless of league host, Gordon’s ownership percentage certainly dropped during his extended absence. Now that he’s healthy, and has remained so for three weeks, any fantasy owner that wants to upgrade their guard depth can consider adding him if he is still available. Any expectations surrounding him need to be kept reasonable though, and anyone that carries Gordon on a fantasy roster should always be ready to cut bait if he goes through a particularly cold stretch, or gets injured again.
