5 Catchers to Avoid Drafting This Year

The catcher position is always the most frustrating spot in a fantasy baseball lineup. They take countless days off and often hit well below .280. To help you prepare for the 2015 draft, here are five catchers to avoid at all costs this spring.

5. Travis d'Arnaud, New York Mets

D'Arnaud has been a popular fantasy prospect for years, but he has simply been unable to put it all together. He disappointed again last season by only hitting .242 on the year with 13 home runs. He was even demoted to the minors for a short period of time. D'Arnaud may develop into a star in a year or two, but for now he is too unreliable to trust as a full-time starter.

Martin has always been a reliable power option behind the plate, as he has smacked double-digit homers in four straight seasons. However, he has struggled to stay on the field. He has played in under 135 games in five straight seasons, including a pathetic 111 games in 2014. He will miss time at some point this season, and considering his streaky numbers, he will be a risky weekly starter, even in the deepest formats.

McCann has made quite the name for himself throughout his 10-year MLB career. Shockingly, though, he has never played in more than 145 games. He simply always misses time. McCann is worth a top-15 pick, but his currently ADP has him being grabbed within the top-eight backstops this spring, which is too high for my taste.

2. Evan Gattis, Houston Astros

Despite having to split time in Atlanta, Gattis has still posted back-to-back 20-HR seasons. However, he has struck out a staggering 178 times in 213 games. He also struggled to hit for average last year (.263), and considering the lack of talent in Houston's lineup, Gattis won't see many hittable balls. The inexperienced stick won't be worth the headache this season.

Molina was once an elite fantasy option behind the plate. He hit over .300 between 2011-2013 and smacked a career-high 22 home runs in 2012. Unfortunately, his 2014 season was a disaster. He only played in 111 games and the veteran has now played in under 140 contests in five straight years. Molina simply won't be worth the asking price this spring.
