2015 Fantasy Baseball Sleeper: Joey Votto

Joey Votto Looks Mad

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Heading into the 2014 fantasy baseball season, Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto was a fixture in the first round. After missing the majority of the season with a quad injury, though, Votto has watched his fantasy value plummet in 2015.

Votto was once the first 1B off the board, but he is currently being drafted behind the likes of Albert Pujols, Victor Martinez and even Buster Posey. The first baseman will be 31 years old when the season begins, which is when most hitters start to hit the wall, but there are still plenty of things to like about Votto in 2015.

For starters, he is one of the purest hitters in the game. Before his 2015 debacle, the first basemen posted five straight seasons with a batting average over .300. He also has an incredible career .310 batting average. Needless to say, his .255 batting average from last season shouldn’t warrant too much concern.

Despite his low average from last season, Votto also drew an incredible amount of walks (47). His On Base Percentage was a jaw-dropping .390, which more than made up for the drop in average. An increase in batting average this season should help the former All-Star get his OBP back over .400.

Votto likely won’t reclaim the top spot at the position this year, but he is still being undervalued this spring and will be a steal outside of the top-10 first basemen. Consider Votto to be the frontrunner for Comeback Player of the Year in 2015.
