By Timothy Downs

Week 2 of the 2016 MLB season is here, and fantasy baseball aficionados and novices alike are scrambling to make adjustments to their roster. Rather than giving you a number of obvious, highly-owned options, I’ve identified players who are (except for one) under 40 percent owned so you actually have a chance to obtain their services. With that in mind, here’s a look at the top 10 waiver wire pickups you need to know about.

10. Ubaldo Jimenez - SP - Baltimore Orioles

I get it: Ubaldo Jimenez has been maddeningly inconsistent throughout the years, and he has probably screwed you out of a championship at one point or another. However, he was fantastic in his first start (seven innings, two runs, nine Ks) and will have a chance to rack up wins with excellent run support this season. Jimenez is just 21 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues.

9. Carlos Beltran - OF - New York Yankees

While he might be old, keep in mind that Carlos Beltran is a borderline Hall of Fame player and still knows a thing or two about hitting. Beltran's off to a fast start (.294, two HRs, four RBIs) and can continue hitting dingers in the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium if he stays healthy. Beltran is just 33 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues.

8. Jeanmar Gomez - RP - Philadelphia Phillies

Jeanmar Gomez appears to have solidified the role as closer for the Philadelphia Phillies early on. Gomez has recorded two saves, and he's struck out two in three scoreless innings thus far. The Phillies aren't going to win many games this season, but when they do, they will be close. Thus, there will be a fair amount of save opportunities for Gomez. He's currently owned in 33 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

7. Chris Tillman - SP - Baltimore Orioles

While I totally understand that it's difficult to trust any of Baltimore's starting pitchers, bare with me for a minute. The Orioles are off to a fast start at 5-0 and are clearly going to mash on offense this year. Early leads should render their starters into less pressurized situations. Chris Tillman was solid in his first start (seven innings, one run, 10 Ks) and should be considered on the wire. He's just 19 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues.

6. Michael Taylor - OF - Washington Nationals

Michael Taylor should receive plenty of playing time now that Ben Revere is out with a strained oblique. He's bombed early on (1-for-16) but is too talented to remain mired in a slump. Expect Taylor to provide you random power and excellent speed once he gets going. Taylor's currently owned in 15 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

5. Howie Kendrick - 2B - Los Angeles Dodgers

Howie Kendrick is slated to make his return to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. With Chase Utley hitting well early on, it's unclear how Los Angeles intends on using the two veterans going forward. However, Kendrick is still worth the risk on the waiver wire now, as Utley will likely be exposed if he continues to play regularly. Kendrick is 38 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues.

4. Scooter Gennett - 2B - Milwaukee Brewers

Scooter Gennett is off to a fast start with the Milwaukee Brewers this season. He's batting .389 with three HRs, three RBIs and has scored a solid five runs. Opposing pitchers really aren't intimidated by Milwaukee's lineup, so it's fair to assume Gennett will continue to see plenty of pitches to hit. He's currently 20 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues.

3. Yasmani Grandal - C - Los Angeles Dodgers

Yasmani Grandal had an up-and-down campaign in 2015, but he finished with perfectly adequate stats for a catcher (.234, 16 HRs, 47 RBIs). Grandal's probably a better option than the catcher on your bench and must be considered on the waiver wire in Week 2. He's currently 30 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues.

2. Mallex Smith - OF - Atlanta Braves

With Ender Inciarte on the shelf with a hamstring injury, the Atlanta Braves have called up Mallex Smith to play center field during Inciarte's DL stint. Smith stole 56 bases in the minors last season and should do plenty of running at the show. Smith's owned in 36 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

1. Nomar Mazara - OF - Texas Rangers

Shin-Soo Choo's injury forced the Texas Rangers to get Nomar Mazara's career rolling earlier than planned. He made an excellent debut on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Mazara should be in plenty of situations conducive to fantasy success batting second in a stout order in Arlington. He's currently owned in 58 percent of Yahoo! leagues, so act fast!
