Building Perfect MLB FanDuel Lineup For Apr. 12

By Roje Smith

If you played yesterday’s lineup, then we can sum up the disappointment with two words — Steven Matz. When your pitcher gives up seven runs in one inning and scores negative-13 points, your night is over. Unlike some knee-jerk reactions I saw last night, I still feel that Matz is a promising young pitcher and will have better days moving forward. It was one bad start against hitters who are improving under the tutelage of Barry Bonds. Speaking of moving forward, we have a loaded slate of 10 games on tonight’s schedule and a multitude of ways to fill out your roster. Let’s bounce back from last night’s disaster by building the perfect MLB FanDuel lineup for April 12.

(P) Jose Fernandez - Miami Marlins - $10,900

Tonight's game between the New York Mets and Miami Marlins should be a treat for pitching fans. It will pit two elite young hurlers in Noah Syndergaard and Jose Fernandez. Despite "Thor" being dominant in his first start against the Royals this year, I've decided to fade him for Fernandez. The Mets have a K-rate of 23.6 percent and I expect Fernandez to exploit that tonight for at least seven strikeouts and the win.

(C) Chris Iannetta - Seattle Mariners - $2,600

Due to paying up for Jose Fernandez, it will be essential to find good value plays tonight. I feel that one of those value plays will be Chris Iannetta squaring off against LHP Derek Holland. Holland has given up a .337 wOBA to RHBs throughout his career and Iannetta has a career .377 wOBA against southpaws. He is also batting .368 against Holland over 19 ABs. In short, I expect Iannetta to be productive tonight.

(1B) Ryan Zimmerman - Washington Nationals - $2,800

One of the good calls from yesterday's lineup was Ryan Zimmerman as he was able to score 24 fantasy points. Due to his price remaining under $3,000 for a player that has started 2016 with a .518 wOBA, I will go to the well with him again. He will face Jhoulys Chacin tonight and it's a good matchup for him. Zimmerman is batting .438 against Chacin over 16 ABs and I feel this will lead to two hits and at least one RBI.

(2B) Robinson Cano - Seattle Mariners - $3,700

After a sizzling start to the season, Robinson Cano has gone 0-for-8 over his last two games. I expect him to break out of that mini-slump as he gets to face Derek Holland tonight. Cano is batting .395 against Holland over 38 ABs. This includes nine singles, three doubles, two HRs and a triple. This bodes well for Cano to raise his current wOBA of .357 this season with a HR and at least two RBI.

(3B) Danny Valencia - Oakland Athletics - $2,500

I don't usually select a third baseman that costs under $3,000, but I'm making an exception tonight. Danny Valencia will square off against Hector Santiago tonight and it's a good spot for him. Valencia is batting .385 against him over 13 ABs and is currently carrying a four-game hitting streak. Santiago struggles the most against RHBs on the road last year and that will be tonight's situation against Valencia. I'm predicting a HR.

(SS) J.J. Hardy - Baltimore Orioles - $2,400

I normally don't select J.J. Hardy unless he's in the middle of a hot streak. However, after seeing him register two doubles and four runs scored over his last four games, I feel that he's starting to heat up. He will face Clay Buchholz tonight and Hardy has a good history against him. He is batting .318 over 22 ABs against him which include two HRs. If he doesn't hit a home run tonight, then he should at least register an RBI double and a run.

(OF) Nelson Cruz - Seattle Mariners - $4,200

Nelson Cruz is off to an impressive start for his 2016 campaign. He's sporting a .467 wOBA so far with an ISO of .375 and a K-rate of 3.7. He draws a great matchup against Derek Holland tonight and I'm expecting him to be productive. Cruz is batting .333 against Holland with a HR and is known to destroy LHPs. I'm not expecting a multi-hit game from Cruz, but the one hit that he should register will be a HR.

(OF) Gerardo Parra - Colorado Rockies - $3,400

Gerardo Parra let a lot of DFS players down in his first series at Coors Field. He went 0-for-9 against the San Diego Padres despite having a very good history in that ballpark. I feel that he will redeem himself in tonight's home game against the San Francisco Giants with Jeff Samardzija on the mound. Parra is batting .368 against him over 19 ABs including a HR and five singles. He should go 2-for-4 tonight with an RBI and a run scored.

(OF) Joey Rickard - Baltimore Orioles - $2,500

I originally had Coco Crisp in this slot, but he's not in tonight's lineup. Therefore, for the same price, I will roll with Joey Rickard facing Clay Buchholz. Rickard has a .401 wOBA so far this season and a K-rate of 9.5 percent. Buchholz struggled a bit more with RHBs last season and I feel that trend will continue in 2016. Therefore, I feel that Rickard should register an XBH or two while getting an RBI and at least one run scored.
