Clayton Kershaw and Noah Syndergaard may be in midseason form at the moment, but there are plenty of starters who have yet to find their groove. While this could be foreshadowing for the rest of the season, it could also mean that a pitcher needs a couple of more starts to get comfortable. So to help you find the guys to target this week, here are five starters to buy low in Week 2 of the fantasy baseball season.
5. Taylor Jungmann, Milwaukee Brewers
Getty ImagesThrough two starts, Jungmann has an awful 11.57 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. The Cardinals roughed him up on Monday to the tune of eight hits, three walks and eight earned runs in only two innings of work. However, the kid has an amazing ability to miss bats and will be a constant in this rotation for years to come. Try to pry Jungmann away for cheap this week while no one has noticed him yet.
4. Michael Pineda, New York Yankees
Getty ImagesPineda may have just taken a tough loss against the offensively stacked Blue Jays earlier this week, but his stat line (6 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 ER, 6 K) wasn’t that bad. Pineda knows how to record outs, and the right-hander may end up being the safest starter in the Bronx. Pineda won’t cost the farm this week and the fireballer will be a reliable source of innings and strikeouts down the stretch.
3. Julio Teheran, Atlanta Braves
Getty ImagesTeheran may have a 0-3 record and 6.35 ERA on the year, but his numbers are misleading. The right-hander has also gone over 200 innings in back-to-back seasons, and because Atlanta’s bullpen is among the worst in baseball, he will be asked to pitch a lot down the stretch. Teheran will be a reliable SP3 to go after this week in standard formats.
2. Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals
Getty ImagesThrough two starts, Wainwright has looked absolutely horrible. The former All-Star has a 6.55 ERA and 1.82 WHIP. Even worse, the opposition is hitting a robust .308 off the veteran. Luckily, Waino can only get better from here. He won’t be too expensive and my money is on him reclaiming a spot among the top-25 arms by the end of the season.
1. Zack Greinke, Arizona Diamondbacks
Getty ImagesGreinke’s start in Arizona has been less than stellar. He has a 0-2 record to go along with a dreadful 9.90 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. However, Greinke has been dealing with the flu this month, which can easily be attributed to his recent struggles. Greinke will bounce back sooner rather than later and will be one of the top buy-low options this week.
