Troy Pfaff: “Because It’s The Cup” Five Hole Dive Style, Vol. 3
BECAUSE IT’S THE CUP - What a weekend in hockey that was. Friday night saw the end of the Buffalo Sabres’ stellar play, while Saturday brought another Sabres loss coupled with a dramatic Washington Capitals shootout victory, giving Alex Ovechkin and the Caps a two point grip on the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The San Jose Sharks also moved within a point of the Pacific Division title while simultaneously sitting a point from missing the playoffs entirely.
Sunday started off with a bang, bringing us a nationally televised afternoon Keystone Rivalry game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers.
If you haven’t seen the end of game shenanigans by now, take a look at the first minute-and-a-half or so of this video.
It started with a ridiculous clean, textbook, shoulder-to-shoulder hit by Penguins forward Joe Vitale on Danny Briere and ended with Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette trying to tight rope the boards and pick a fight with Penguins coaches Dan Bylsma and Tony Granato before being removed from the game.
I’m not entirely sure why Laviolette expected the Penguins to send out their top forwards with just over a minute remaining in a three-goal game with their biggest rivals, but the former NHL defenseman went so far as to call the situation “a gutless move by [the Penguins] coach.”

Interesting.
The Penguins and Flyers meet again on Saturday and appear headed for a first-round playoff series sure to provide even more fireworks.
