If you didn’t like Ryane Clowe and the San Jose Sharks before than you are really going to despise them now. Especially if you are a Los Angeles Kings fan.

In Thursday nights 6-5 Sharks shootout win over the Kings, Clowe went a bit too far by deliberately tipping the puck while on the bench, preventing Los Angeles from getting a scoring chance.

The game was knotted up 5-5 with about three-minutes left in the third period of a wildly entertaining game when Clowe opted to bend the rules.

According to rule 56.2 of the NHL rule book, Clowe should have been assessed a penalty for interfering with the play while not on the ice. Unfortunately, none of the officials saw the infraction and the game was allowed to continue.

Here is the actual text for the rule book:

A minor penalty shall be imposed on any identifiable player on the players’ bench or penalty bench who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movements of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play. In addition, should a player about to come onto the ice, play the puck while one or both skates are still on the players’ or penalty bench, a minor penalty for interference shall be assessed.
The appropriate penalty according to the playing rules shall be assessed when a player on the players’ or penalty bench gets involved with an opponent on the ice during a stoppage in play. The player(s) involved may be subject to additional sanctions as appropriate pursuant to Rule 28 – Supplementary Discipline.

Obviously, Clowe knew what he did was a violation of rules, plus it was downright cheap. He flat out denied it in a post game interview. His response when asked about the play was, “I don’t know what your talking about.”

I want to be the first to remind Ryane that hockey players are like elephants – they never forget anything. This is something the Kings or their fans won’t soon forget, especially if the Kings end up losing out on the Pacific Division crown. With one game left in the season, the Kings are Sharks are tied for first with 94 points.

What do you think, is all fair in love and war or was Clowe’s act of gamesmanship nothing more than blatant cheating?
