The Los Angeles Kings’ ‘Sassy’ Twitter Presence
The Los Angeles Kings are in the midst of a playoff quarterfinal series against the Vancouver Canucks–the Kings lead the series 1-0–and the team’s official Twitter presence is getting into the action with sometimes-sassy, sometimes-divisive tweets about the games and their opponents.
Whoever runs the @LAKings account (there are no signatures on tweets, like on the Boston Bruins account) knows that their team is kind of the underdog in this series. But they’re not big fans of the punditry and prognostication:
Of course, like every other official NHL account, @LAKings provides play-by-play commentary during games. Most of the time, it’s pretty straightforward. Sometimes, though, they decide to have a little fun, like when they noticed Mike Richards and Ryan Kesler having a discussion that ended in Kesler, well…
When the Kings beat the Canucks 4-2 in their first playoff meeting, @LAKings then issued this tweet, which caused quite a few angry fans to chime in with their responses, most of them mentioning the word “class” or “classless.”
@LAKings isn’t only active during games, though, and they do tend to respond to fans. They’ve been on the ball with regards to solving game blackout issues in the Los Angeles Area. Sometimes, they pick someone to respond to and probably make their day.
Zack Bennett, a Nashville Predators fan whose Twitter profile mentions a time in 2003 when he was on Wheel of Fortune, praised the Kings’ Twitter presence by saying “The @LAKings Social Media Director is my new hero.” The Kings replied “You were our favorite Wheel of Fortune contestant.”
When an Edmonton Oilers fan tweeted @LAKings saying that they were jumping on the bandwagon, @LAKings responded:
This tweet to a fan sums up the @LAKings philosophy, though:
Even if you’re not a Kings fan, this Twitter account might be worth a follow, whether for a laugh or for maybe seeing the beginnings of the next hockey Twitter controversy.
