Steve Bernier may have committed the costliest penalty in hockey history.  The New Jersey Devils forward received an ejection for boarding Los Angeles Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi.  This led to a five minute power play for the Kings and they responded with three goals.

This penalty was just extremely stupid.  Steve Bernier did not even make a play on the puck.  He went for the kill shot and he got it.  He left Scuderi bloodied, but the Kings look to get the last laugh.  The Devils could rally for the big victory but I just do not see that happening.

Steve Bernier is not going to be popular in the locker room.  Coming into this, I thought the Devils had a chance of coming back in the series.  They had won two games in a row and had a lot of momentum.  This hit killed all of the mojo they had.  I have never seen three power play goals on one penalty, not even in video games.  I’ve played a lot of hockey games in my day and could never do something like that.

The Devils are going to be wondering about what might have been.  This penalty notwithstanding, digging yourself a 3-0 hole is not any way to pick up a title.  It is for the Cup, but the Devils showed no sense of urgency until they were on the brink.  They are going to have to dig deep to rally and stay alive.
