According to a recent article by Adrian Wojnarowski the Golden State Warriors are rumored to be interested in acquiring Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic. Ultimately the trade scenario would mean that either Stephen Curry or Monta Ellis would be the major piece from the Warriors and likely the preference from the Magic would be Curry.

Of course the issue with Curry is that in the past 15 months he has sprained his right ankle seven times and also had surgery during the offseason to repair ligaments in that ankle. The other issue is with Howard who more than likely would be a one-year rental for the Warriors.

So, does it make sense to trade one of the Warriors most popular players for a superstar center who isn’t likely to sign? If Ellis is the one traded does it make sense to trade one of the best shooting guards in the league for a player who isn’t going to stay? The obvious answer to both questions is no!

What Joe Lacob and Peter Guber the Warriors owners should be doing is dispelling these rumors. The Warriors have already faced some adversity this year with Curry’s injury, David Lee missing a game because of an illness and Dorell Wright has struggled to start the season.

On Matt Steinmetz’s blog he has a recent quote in regards to the rumor involving Howard and he said “I think it’s obvious that our ownership would like to come up with a superstar to add to this team. We’ll always look into opportunities where someone might be available.”

The idea of the Warriors bringing in a superstar is intriguing, yet Howard’s acquisition isn’t realistic. One idea that is more realistic is for the Warriors is to go after Kevin Love who has set a deadline of January 10th for a contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves as reported by Kurt Helin of NBC Sports.

Another player the Warriors could go after would be Josh Smith who is perpetually rumored to be leaving the Atlanta Hawks. By going after Smith the Warriors would not have to even consider including Curry or Ellis in a trade and Smith would definitely upgrade the small forward position for the Warriors.

Yet, the Warriors shouldn’t be concerned at this point with making a big move. What the Warriors need at this point is to find consistency and that includes getting Curry healthy, Lee fully healthy after battling an illness recently, Wright to regain his form from last season and for rookie Klay Thompson to find his shooting stroke. At this point it’s too early to even considering making such a drastic move.

  1. Saucy says:

First of all the trade basically isn’t possible to begin with because there are better options for orlando. Secondly, the warriors are just exploiting this rumor for ticket sales. Third, the Warriors need to blow it up or outright tank because running with this squad will just keep them in the suck. That’s truff.

I agree that Orlando will receive better offers for Howard and also agree that it was more media attention then actually being involved in an attempt in acquiring Howard. The Warriors do not need to blow anything up or outright tank the Warriors have the talent what the team needs is to be healthy and either upgrade the small forward or center position.
