John Daly May Have Torn Ligaments in His Elbow
PGA tour veteran John Daly revealed today that he may have ligament damage in his elbow. After shooting a 7 over par 79 at the Avantha Masters in India, the beleaguered pro released a statement via Twitter earlier today indicating that his “elbow snapped” after a coming into contact with tree roots during a shot on the 9th hole. He subsequently posted a picture of his arm in a cast, but reassured his followers that there were no broken bones. However, European Tour doctors advised him of the potential tear. Much to his credit, Daly did finish the round, and shooting 7 over par while playing with torn elbow ligaments is actually an impressive feat.
Daly, once an up and coming star in the world of golf, has seen his share of adversity throughout a long and often tumultuous career. He has fought very public battles with both gambling and alcohol abuse; as of late, however, it seems that he has been overcome those particular vices. In recent years, he has bounced around the world, playing on different tours. Without a full exemption on the PGA tour, he must rely on his status as a past champion or on sponsor exemptions in order to participate in events on the tour.
While he has not enjoyed a great deal of recent success, Daly does have quite a few accolades to his name. He was named the PGA tour rookie of the year in 1991 in addition to winning the PGA Championship in 1991 and The Open Championship in 1995. Daly’s last PGA victory, however, came in 2004 the Buick Invitational, where he edged out current world number 1 Luke Donald and American Chris Riley.
Daly may currently be best known for his brash attire, as he is sponsored by company known as Loudmouth Golf. The vibrant, patterned shorts and pants have become quite popular recently with golfers of all skill level. Many of the designs are considered “throwbacks” to the days of Johnny Miller and the like.
