Tiger Woods Looks Healthy in Monday Round at Tavistock Cup

Eight days ago Tiger Woods was forced to withdraw from the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship with a strained left Achilles tendon. However, Tiger looked to be in good health on Monday at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in a best-ball pairing with Justin Rose for the 2012 Tavistock Cup.

The two partners are both members of Sean Foley’s golf camp, and they were competing as members of Team Albany on Monday afternoon. The pair was able to post a nine-under 63 for the day, as Team Albany attempts to end a three-year winning streak for Team Lake Nona.

The two were the first to go out this morning, and they were paired with Charles Howell III (a.k.a. Chucky Three-Sticks) and Bubba Watson of Team Isleworth. There are 24 players in total competing for a total purse of over $2 million; however, the biggest story of the day, per usual, was Tiger Woods–specifically his health.

Woods played particularly well during the early portion of the round and walked Lake Nona without a discernible limp. In a post-round press conference with the Golf Channel’s Gary McCord, Woods mentioned that his withdrawal at Doral was a precautionary measure that would allow him to get treatment and return in time for the Masters without risking further injury.

However, despite playing in a grouping with Tiger Woods, the creativity of Bubba Watson was still on full display. At the 582-yard Par 5 11th hole, which played into the wind, Bubba hit driver off the deck on his second shot, yet somehow managed to impart enough spin for the ball to land softly, leaving him a little over 40 feet for eagle.

Tomorrow, during singles play, Tiger Woods will tee off in the final group with the likes of Sean O’Hair, Graeme McDowell and Thomas Bjorn. The winning team after Tuesday’s play receives $600,000 to split among the six players, while the low medalist on Day Two receives the Payne Stewart Salver Award and an additional $200,000.

On Thursday, Tiger will participate in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. It will be his final tournament leading up to next month’s Masters at Augusta National.
