This past weekend the Europeans added another Ryder Cup victory to their recent streak of dominance. At the center of Europe’s historic come from behind win over the United States was Ian Poulter. On a team loaded with veteran talent and star power, Poulter turned in an MVP-worthy performance.

His emotional play was a force throughout the tournament, including his singles victory over Webb Simpson. The Englishman was undefeated throughout the three-day competition as he played to a 4-0 record. He rolled in putt after putt to rack up the points for the Europeans.

Poulter’s play was especially clutch during his Saturday-foursomes victory with Rory McIlroy. During their match against the U.S.’ pairing of Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson Poulter was the epitome of focus and consistency. His five straight birdies to close out the round kept European hopes alive heading into the singles matches.

Looking back, this was the momentum shift that initiated the European comeback. He continued to spark the European team as he took down U.S. Open champion Simpson during the morning match-play session.

The fact that Poulter did not automatically qualify for the European team makes his performance even more impressive. Poulter’s performance at Medinha gives him one of the best Ryder cup records in the European player pool as he moves to 12-3-0 all-time.

His participation in previous competitions included the European wins in 2004 and 2010. While he was an integral part of those winning sides, his stellar contribution to the dramatic European victory in 2012 will not soon be forgotten.
