RBC Heritage: Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell Lurking Just Off of Lead

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

While there is a trio of unexpected leaders after almost two full rounds at the RBC Heritage, two very accomplished golfers from across the pond are lurking well within striking distance. Luke Donald is at five under par after two rounds and is one shot back while Graeme McDowell is two shots off of the pace.  G-Mac tied for the low round of the day in conditions that were less than optimal, to say the least.

The wind picked up tremendously as the day wore on, preventing anyone from making a statement by carding a really low score. Those that got out early in the day were at a distinct advantage and were able to miss the brunt of the weather. On a track as tight as Harbour Town Golf Links windy conditions make it just about impossible to score.

McDowell spoke about the fact that controlling the golf ball is imperative at this course and made it clear that hitting the ball a mile won’t get you very far this week. “It doesn’t need to be long. Modern technology has not sort of made this golf course old‑fashioned in any shape or form.   Sometimes the fairway is not good enough, you have to be on the left side or the right side, 300 yards might be too much and 250 might not be enough at times. The guy that wins here this week will have control of his golf ball.”

One or two shots are nothing for players that have as much talent as McDowell and Donald. Both are feeling very comfortable with their respective games and how they are set up for this golf course. I full expect one or both of these guys to make a run over the weekend.
