Apparently Boo Weekley has an affinity for plaid jackets. He added another one to his collection today with a win at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Weekley has three wins in his career, all of which have resulted in him being given plaid jackets. The other two wins to his credit came at Harbour Town in 2007 and 2008.
It’s been a while since Weekley has found the winner’s circle and during that time he has struggled to even maintain his PGA Tour card. He’s come quite a long way considering that his bank account just got $1.1 million bigger thanks to the win this week. That check exceeds what he had earned up to this point for the entire season combined. While he’s been playing solid golf this year, this victory gives him a huge boost in several ways. In addition to the fact that the win guarantees him a Tour card through 2015, the 500 FedEx Cup points also move him from 28th in those standings all the way to sixth.
A lot of people look at Weekley with his relatively quiet demeanor and the camouflage outfits and overlook the fact that he is, in fact, an excellent ball striker. His four top 10 finishes this year (including this week’s win) demonstrate that fact. Weekley did exactly what he needed to do in order to win this week – he was tied for fifth in greens in regulation and in fifth place alone in putting average.
This win has been a long time coming as Weekley has been sniffing round the top of leaderboards for a while now. Maybe now that the pressure to get a win is off of his back he can get back to playing golf at a high level for a consistent stretch of time.
