When a golf tournament boasts the firepower that we will see this week at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance, there are sure to be some incredibly intriguing pairings. The first two days of the event, held at Muirfield Village, are no exception to that.
Any time that Tiger Woods tees it up, especially at an iconic tournament when he is playing as well as he has been this year, his group is sure to get a great deal of attention. When you add Fred Couples and Keegan Bradley to the mix fans will salivate. Woods is the defending champion, has won this event five times and is coming off of his fourth win of the year at the PLAYERS Championship. “Boom Boom” Couples won here all the way back in 1998. Bradley hasn’t done much other than record six top 10 finishes thus far in 2013.
Justin Rose – my favorite this week – is playing alongside Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson for the first two days. Watson has been struggling a bit, having finished outside of the top 10 in every event since the Accenture Match Play Championship. The early part of 2013 has been incredibly disappointing for him, but a solid finish this week could get him on the right track. McIlroy, on the other hand, started off the year dreadfully but has rebounded quite nicely as of late. He has finished inside of the top 25 in each of his last four starts on the PGA Tour. Rose is looking to win this tournament for the second time and move up from fourth in the official world golf rankings.
