Tiger Woods is easily the most scrutinized golfer in the world. People don’t just expect him to play well in every tournament, they expect him to be in contention for a victory. If any other golfer was having the year Woods is having, they’d be getting praised to no end. But 2013 is just business as usual for Tiger. His victory at the Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday gives him five tournament wins for the year and also all the momentum heading into next weekend’s PGA Championship.
Woods is easily playing the best golf he has since his last major win in 2008. Even though he’s disappointed on Sundays in majors this year, he’s still played well for the most part and been able to stick around. He had only two strokes to make up at the Open Championship two weeks back heading into the final round, but his putter just wasn’t there. However 14 days later, Woods cruised to a win at the Bridgestone Invitational.
He flirted with a 59 on Friday and ended up equaling the best round of his life with a 61. He was able to play conservatively for the remainder of the tournament, but still managed to shoot -2 on Saturday and Sunday. When it was all said and done, he won by an extremely comfortable margin of seven strokes.
You can’t really draw up a better way to get momentum heading into the year’s final major, as Tiger’s confidence has to be very high. The formula is simple on paper – he must keep the momentum going and get out to another early lead at the PGA. If he can do that, I believe the streak will finally come to an end.
