He might not be fighting for a spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but Sergio Garcia knows how important a win at the Wyndham Championship can prove to be. The defending champion went on an absolute tear last year after taking home the winner’s portion of the check from Sedgefield Country Club. He has gone 23 of 24 in cuts made since that win with the only exception being his withdrawal at Bay Hill. In that time, Garcia has 11 top-25 finished on the PGA Tour alone.
He’s currently only ranked 66th in the FedEx Cup standings, but Garcia is inside of the top 20 in the most recent official world golf rankings – he is currently sitting in 19th position. The Spaniard is all but assured of getting into the playoffs next week which should take a bit of pressure off of his title defense.
The driver may not be the friendliest club in Garcia’s bag, as he ranks a paltry 74th in total driving. Even considering the fact that he is 84th in greens in regulation, El Niño has managed to score well all year long. His ranking of eighth speaks to just how well he has been able to score and the fact that he leads the Tour in strokes gained – putting has certainly contributed to his success.
Garcia will be playing with two of this week’s other favorites – Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson – for the first two rounds of this tournament. There should be plenty of fireworks to keep track of in this group. It’s likely that at least one of the championship contenders will come out of this pairing.
