Jordan Spieth has been on a crazy ride over the course of this PGA Tour season. The rookie has already picked up a victory this year in addition to five other top 10 finishes. His performance this season has put him in 16th place in the FedEx Cup standings and 54th in the official world golf rankings – not bad for a twenty year old. Now, Spieth is in prime position to pick up his second win of the year at the Wyndham Championship.
He is currently just one shot off of the third round pace of 10 under par established by John Huh and Patrick Reed. Spieth is joined by Zach Johnson and Bob Estes at nine under par after three rounds of play. There are a host of players within striking distance heading into the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. Even when this track is playing difficult there are scoring opportunities aplenty – just ask Zach Johnson, who turned in a 66 on Saturday despite incredibly difficult pin placements and wet, rainy conditions.
I have a feeling that this tournament is going to be a shootout down the stretch. With so many talented golfers within just a few shots of the lead, the winner of this event is going to have shoot in the mid-60s on Sunday to win. It’s difficult to determine what impact the FedEx Cup pressure is going to have on these guys down the stretch. Undoubtedly, some will falter and miss their shot at the playoffs while others rise to the occasion and play themselves into the postseason.
