Power Ranking the Top 15 Golfers of the 2014 Players Championship

THE PLAYERS Championship

THE PLAYERS Championship is my favorite tournament outside of the four majors. For starters, it’s played at the beautiful TPC Sawgrass. More importantly, it’s a tournament that fans and golfers alike thoroughly enjoy. The 2014 PLAYERS should be loaded with quality talent, which should make for an exciting tournament. Check out a power ranking of the top 15 golfers who should have success at THE PLAYERS.

15. Lee Westwood

The biggest reason Lee Westwood starts off the countdown at No. 15 is simply because he has enjoyed success at TPC Sawgrass. If it weren’t for that, he wouldn’t be considered for this list. However, previous success can easily translate to current success, especially since he feels comfortable on the course.

14. Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth continues to impress in his rookie season. Even though THE PLAYERS isn’t usually a welcoming tournament for golfers their first time around, Spieth clearly plays above the norm. The 20-year-old has finished in the top 10 in five out of his 11 cuts, including second place at the Masters.

13. Jason Dufner

Jason Dufner continues to play great golf this season. He has finished in the top 15 four times, including three top 10 finishes in 2014. The fact that he has seen success at TPC Sawgrass should give him confidence to be a contender.

12. Henrik Stenson

Henrik Stenson absolutely crushes TPC Sawgrass every time he plays. The 2009 champion has finished in the top 25 six times, including four in the top 10 at THE PLAYERS. It’s clear that Stenson is destined to get another championship at TPC Sawgrass, which means 2014 could be his year.

11. Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson is the fan favorite no matter what tournament he appears in. Unfortunately, his play has failed to match the enthusiasm. With that being said, he does have six finishes in the top 20 this season. Mickelson typically plays well at TPC Sawgrass, as evidence of his 2007 PLAYERS Championship victory.

10. Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy has yet to win a tournament this season, although he does have five top 10 finishes in just 24 rounds of golf. McIlroy will be looking to build off of his eighth place finish at last year’s PLAYERS.

J.B. Holmes has been climbing the world rankings this season thanks in large part to a win at the Wells Fargo Championship this past weekend. Holmes has four top 20 finishes at THE PLAYERS, which means he certainly knows the ins and outs of the course.

8. Zach Johnson

Zach Johnson is playing some great golf as of late. Even better is that he typically does well playing TPC Sawgrass. Despite never winning THE PLAYERS, he has finished in the top 25 in six of his nine attempts.

7. Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia may struggle elsewhere, but there is something about TPC Sawgrass that seems to calm him. He won THE PLAYERS back in 2008, and he has added three other top 10 finishes on top of that. Not to mention, he has made 10 cuts in a row in the tournament.

6. Luke Donald

Luke Donald has finished in the top 10 in three of his previous six tournaments. To add to it, he’s made seven consecutive cuts at THE PLAYERS. It’s only a matter of time until he clinches a win at TPC Sawgrass.

5. Adam Scott

Adam Scott won THE PLAYERS back in 2004. The hope is that his luck will return 10 years later. He has seemed to find a groove at TPC Sawgrass, which means expect a top 10 finish from the Aussie.

Hometown advantage certainly has its perks. Jim Furyk is always considered dangerous at TPC Sawgrass, which is why no one should ever rule him out at THE PLAYERS, especially since he’s finished in the top 25 a whopping eight times.

3. Jimmy Walker

Jimmy Walker currently leads the FedEx Cup in points with 2,046. He’s also the only player on tour who has three wins this season. He will try to make his tie for 15th place in last year’s PLAYERS Championship seem like a distant memory.

It was a mere two years ago that Matt Kuchar won THE PLAYERS Championship. He has to be considered one of the favorites in 2014 due to the fact that he has finished in the top five in four consecutive tournament appearances.

It might be crazy to see Bubba Watson at No. 1, especially since he’s not known for success at TPC Sawgrass. However, winning the Masters gives him an edge in the power rankings that could be the difference maker this time around.
