5 Golfers Fans Should Be Rooting for at the 2014 Open Championship

The 2014 British Open is still a couple of days away, but it is never too early to decide who you are going to root for at the Open Championship. Although there are plenty of other golfers who people will be rooting for — there are 156 players in the field — here are five golfers fans should be rooting for at Royal Liverpool.

Jordan Spieth is only 20 years old. Still, he is one of the best golfers in the world. He could enter superstar status if he can somehow find a way to win at this year’s Open Championship.

Sergio Garcia was supposed to be one of the best players for years to come. He has had a respectable career so far, but he has never won a major. Garcia is a player who once said he was not good enough to win a major. Just imagine how happy he would be if he actually did pull off that feat, and how great of a story that would be.

Golf could use another superstar. Although Tiger Woods is still in the sport, he has not won a major in what feels like forever. Not only would McIlroy winning the Open be a great story, it would give golf some much-needed attention. Like I said, golf needs another superstar not named Tiger Woods.

2. Tom Watson

This one is likely not going to happen, but how awesome would it be if Tom Watson took home the trophy on Sunday. He is 64 years old and has not won the Open Championship since 1983.

Not everyone likes Tiger Woods. Past troubles aside, it would be great to see Tiger holding up the trophy at a major once again. He helps give golf the much-needed attention it deserves. Tiger winning the 2014 British Open would definitely give golf a bunch of attention. Not to mention, it would be nice to see Woods getting one major closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record.
