The World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions got a little bizarre on Thursday when PGA golfer Patrick Reed was heard by a boom mic saying an expletive and gay slur. The PGA Tour does not allow the use of obscene language on the golf course (someone should tell that to Tiger Woods), which is why Reed can expect a substantial fine to float his way.
The question here is should he be fined for calling himself an expletive and gay slur?
Yes, Reed was seen on camera saying to himself “you fu—– fa—-” after he missed a putt. It is important to note it was not directed towards another person. And, although there were other f-bombs included in his moment of self-disappointment, the gay slur was the real problem.
Anyone who has ever played golf has had moments like Reed had. Sure, I’m not calling myself a gay slur on the golf course, but I am not afraid to admit some swear words do get dropped from time to time. From that perspective, it is hard to get mad at what Reed did.
Many are shocked that he will get fined by the PGA Tour for using bad words directed at himself. However, the reality is it is much bigger than that.
The PGA Tour is attempting to crack down on the use of obscene language at events that are attended by thousands of people. Believe it or not, someone could have overheard Reed say “you fu—– fa—-” and been deeply offended. Even worse, there are children located throughout the crowd who look up to the professional golfers. Like it or not, the men are role models and must act accordingly.
At this point, the fine is standard procedure for using strong language. Reed just has to hope the punishment is not more severe considering he used a gay slur.
