When it comes to the toughest jobs in America, most people think that title goes to the President of the United States. That may be true, but in the world of golf, few positions are as pressure-packed as that of Tiger Woods‘s swing coach. Some of the best teachers in the game have worked with Woods, and all have eventually fallen by the wayside. Now, Woods appears ready to take his game in a new direction, hiring Chris Como as his newest consultant.
The 36-year-old is no stranger to the upper echelon of the game, having worked with PGA Tour players like Aaron Baddeley in the past. What makes this hire so interesting is Como’s take on teaching the golf swing, and it’s something that could help Woods extend his career for years to come.
Como has partnered with Dr. Young-Hoo Kwon, an esteemed professor of biomechanics at Texas Woman’s University, to revamp the way players think about and work on the golf swing. In the process of earning his master’s degree in the same field, Como believes that he can take this new approach, and combine it with the fundamental skills that have made him a Golf Digest Top 100 coach in America, and perhaps make one of the all-time greats even better late in his career.
For Woods, this is not only a great decision, but also perhaps an indication that he understands that continuing to do things his way may not still be the best for his remaining goals in golf. As the injury list gets longer and Woods gets older – he’ll be 39 the next time he enters an official Tour event – he has to do everything he can to stay healthy enough to compete. Como’s expert understanding of how to get the most out of every player’s body can only be a good thing.
Como’s got some big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Butch Harmon, Hank Haney, and Sean Foley, but if he can get Tiger to buy in to the system, this might be the perfect pairing for both.
