The Mickelson brothers had the brilliant idea of making professional golfer Phil Mickelson an assistant on Tim Mickelson’s coaching staffat Arizona State University. Unfortunately, Phil supposedly did not do that great of a job of being an assistant because Tim was forced to let him go in place of someone who could handle the positon.

“Yes, I recently got fired from that position,” Mickelson said on Wednesday, according to CBS Sports. “As of the first week of January, Tim needed, my brother, needed a real assistant to help out with a bunch of the things going on with the traveling and I got fired.”

Apparently, Phil’s only desire was to make phone calls in the recruiting process. When it actually came down to doing the gritty part of the job, such as setting up traveling arrangements and dinner reservations, he wanted no part of it.

Still, Phil’s offer to make the calls in the first place to help his alma mater was gracious. Not to mention, the recruits he talked to were most likely ecstatic to have a conversation with the golfing legend.

It was supposed to stay under the radar because Phil did not want the publicity. However, one of the recruits let it slip on social media what the Mickelson brothers were up to.

“We had developed a plan to where I could call some recruits,” Mickelson said. “We weren’t really going to say anything and hadn’t said anything for a few weeks until one of the players had tweeted it and it looked like there were some improprieties, which there weren’t, so we had to publicly announce I was assistant coach; otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to make the phone calls I had been making.”

Mickelson will be forced back to his day job on the PGA Tour. Clearly, there is no way he would be able to do both, which is why I have to imagine the firing was mutual.
