It has been a strange week for professional golfer Tiger Woods. Not only did he shoot an 82 in the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the worst score of his illustrious career, and miss the cut at the tournament, but also he now has Phil Mickelson sticking up for him in the media.
“I think that Tiger’s going to have the last laugh,” Mickelson said, according to CBS Sports. “I think that his, his short game, historically, is one of the best of all time. I think his golf game is probably the best of all time.”
“I don’t think he’s going to have any problems, I really don’t. I think we all, myself included, have had stretches where we feel a little uncomfortable, we don’t hit it solid, and usually it’s just a small tweak. Because it’s such a short swing that it’s not a hard thing to fix. I just don’t see that lasting more than a week or two.”
It is certainly courteous of Mickelsonto stand up for Woodsin the superstar’s time of need. With that said, it is peculiar that he has chosen to do so. Mickelson gains nothing by putting his name on the line for Woods, other than Woods himself knowing Mickelson has his back.
Lefty’s opinion that he does not believe Tiger is going to have any problems going forward is a little ridiculous. Sure, all golfers go through stretches where they do not feel comfortable in their swing or play in general. But, what Woods is going through is much more than a minor problem that can be fixed with a small tweak.
The man shot above 80 in a regular PGA Tour event. Not only is his physical game in dire need of a makeover, but shooting an 82 will do a wonder on his mental game for tournaments to come.
I think I can say for nearly every fan of golf that no one wants to see Woods struggle the way he has. It is just the opposite. Hopefully, he can figure out a way to get his game back on track so he can inject some joy back into his career.
