The Green Bay Packers are one of the most historic and successful professional sports teams in the entire United States.  In the last 20 years, they have also been blessed by something else.  The Packers have managed to have two potential Hall of Fame quarterbacks lead their squads.  Not many teams can make the transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers.  In fact, I would say most fans would kill to have their team have that type of fortune.

With Rodgers currently on a record setting pace and Favre somewhere in the far reaches of Mississippi, there is a debate beginning to bubble up.  It’s small right now, but I can see it being big down the line.  When the dust is settled on Rodgers’s career, the comparisons will surely be made.  Who was the better Packer, Rodgers or Favre?

This is going to deal a lot with projections for Rodgers’s career so bear with me on that.  I’m also not going to say that Rodgers will break Favre’s records because I don’t think anyone can expect that type of longevity.  However, the name of the game is championships and Rodgers has an excellent chance to surpass Favre.

As a diehard Packers fan, I can say I have no love for Brett Favre right now.  The ending to his time in Green Bay was ugly and neither side won the battle.  Green Bay could’ve handled the process much better and Favre didn’t need to act like such a diva to the media.  That being said, Favre, numbers-wise, is one of the best to ever play quarterback.

I’m too young to remember Favre’s true prime when he was rolling off three straight MVPs.  In fact, I can barely remember the Super Bowl win.  However, I do have the last 9 or so of his seasons in Green Bay in my memory and they provide an interesting outlook on his career.

See, Favre was a double edged sword.  He could just as easily lose you a game as he could win you a game.  Favre was noted for fourth quarter comebacks, but sometimes his play in the previous three quarters was the reason a comeback was needed.  His struggles in domed stadiums was well-noted in the media.  However, that struggle conveniently disappeared when he joined the Vikings, but whatever.

When you cheer for a team, you want championships.  That’s the end all goal.  With Favre, for as great as he was, only brought one Lombardi trophy to Green Bay.  Some of the circumstances were beyond his control.  During his MVP stretch, they ran up against the Dallas Cowboys numerous times, who were only the best team in the league at the time.  I can’t argue with his Super Bowl loss because that Denver team played an absolutely fantastic football game.  Nothing less than Green Bay’s A game was going to win that one.  The Catch II in San Francisco also stopped a powerful Packers team.  If video replay was around, Green Bay beats the 49ers and who knows what happens after that.

There were some Packers teams that just weren’t good enough to win a Super Bowl, but there have been some playoff moments that made me shudder.  The 6 interception game against the Rams was an awful game to watch.  That was an extremely good team and there’s no saying Green Bay wins with Favre playing great.  However, it was the start of a trend.

First, there was the infamous Wild Card game in 2003.  Green Bay had never lost a home playoff game.  I remember the exact spot where I watched this game.  I watched my favorite team get dissected by an Atlanta Falcons team led by a young Michael Vick.  Green Bay had numerous injuries to deal with, but Favre’s stats were not impressive.  Two interceptions and a fumble from the man who seemed so in tune with Lambeau mystique was hard to fathom.  It didn’t stop there.

The following year is a game better known for a defensive gaffe.  The 4th-and-26 game.  That is the moment that sticks out and honestly it should.  Green Bay should have won that game in regulation.  However, the defense choked and that happens.  Green Bay won the toss and started with the ball in OT.  It was then that Favre threw one of the dumbest passes I’ve ever seen.  A backfooted bomb to Robert Ferguson had no chance of being completed except to Philadelphia.  The Eagles took advantage of the gift and advanced.  That Packers team could have won the Super Bowl given a chance.  However, they quite literally threw it away.

The last awful playoff moment from Favre as a Packer came in the 2007 NFC Championship Game.  The Packers had received a few lucky breaks and started with the ball in overtime.  The luck ran out as Favre threw a crucial interception and the Giants managed to win the game and the Super Bowl.

I get the fact that it was extremely cold at that game and Favre isn’t a young man at that time.  However, the throw was indefensible.  He had open receivers all over the field.  A checkdown to Ryan Grant picks up a first down and keeps the drive alive.  A forced throw to Donald Driver that had about a 1 percent chance of being complete was instead the choice.

Those last two games bring me to Aaron Rodgers.  There is just a different feeling I get when watching him compared to Favre.  Favre was a roller coaster.  The highs were awesome but the lows were downright awful.  I always watched nervously, waiting for the risky pass into coverage that could blow the game.  Watching Rodgers is much more relaxing.  He’s in total control of the situation.  He may take a risk once or twice, but he doesn’t make awful mistakes at bad times.

The game against Minnesota last week was a perfect example.  Rodgers was surgical in his throwing.  Late in the game, the offense had stalled and Minnesota was on the comeback.  There were a couple plays Rodgers took a sack instead of forcing a throw.  If that’s Favre, he forces a throw.  Maybe it goes for a touchdown and all is well.  On the other side, it could easily be an interception that turns the momentum completely in the opponent favor.

Right now, Rodgers resembles 2007 Tom Brady.  I’m not sure if he can keep his play up like Brady did all year, but the numbers are just breathtaking.  Even without numbers, you can see the comparisons.  Both players were in command of every situation.  They made throws that made your jaw drop.

Right now, the Super Bowl totals for each player are tied at one.  Favre rescued Green Bay from the black hole known as the 1970s and 1980s.  Rodgers helped the Packers transition from a great quarterback without missing a beat.  I can’t comment on Favre’s play during the MVP run, but I can’t imagine that it was as effective as Rodgers.  Favre had phenomenal numbers, maybe even better than Rodgers does now, during that time.  I just feel safer with Rodgers as my quarterback.

Rodgers play could fall off the rest of the season and it would make this post look downright laughable.  I just don’t see that happening.  Rodgers has a good six or seven year window where he can play at this level, barring injury.  I fully expect Green Bay to add at least one more Super Bowl to its collection in this time.

The older generation may disagree with me, but I’m taking Rodgers right now over Favre in his prime.  Favre may have the ability to win you more games, but Rodgers will lose you less games if that makes sense.  When it comes down to crunch time, I want the Belt in my corner, not the Gunslinger.

36 Rants to “The Aaron Rodgers – Brett Favre Debate: Who...”

  1. FAVRESUCKS says:

RODGERS ALL DAY BABY, HIS ACCURACY, POCKET PRESENCE, AND POISE ON THE FIELD IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER. He has officially surpassed Brady (Not Brady in his prime, but at this moment in time A-Rod is better than Brady). Aaron Rodgers is a beast and the packers will repeat this year

    • Rama says:

A-Rod goes with a written script and Favre writes his own scripts and continuing that way for 18 odd seasons is not a joke. What I like about Favre is his gunslinger attitude even at 40 and I’m not sure how many will have it for that long.

  2. Frank says:

There is no real debate here — Rodgers is clearly better than Favre. Rodgers already has one ring and will likely deliver more. He takes fewer dumb risks than Favre, so his downside is not as bad — he’s not recklessly selfish for his own stats. He already has the surgical precision and dominant pocket command of Favre’s best years, so his upside is just as high. That’s why Favre is acting out like a three-year-old in the media this year instead of taking the high road to Canton like Joe Montana or John Elway. Favre knows he’s already been surpassed by the classy young QB whom Favre mistreated as a rookie. And oh yeah: Rodgers has already demonstrated far more class than Favre has ever shown, refusing to comment when Favre says stupid nonsense about him. Rodgers: better QB, better leader, better person. Brett, just go away and shut up; maybe everyone will forget about texting your dong to a reporter and crapping all over your legacy with the Vikings.

  3. MJ Kasprzak says:

Right now, there is no debate–it is still Favre. Until Rodgers can do what he is doing for several years, the totality of Favre’s accomplishments puts him ahead.

However, this becomes a debate as soon as Aaron Rodgers wins another title. Even if it happens this year and his career freakishly ends so his numbers do not compare, he will have accomplished the one thing Favre could not (multiple titles) and is likely to have one of Favre’s three MVPs. A case could be made then.

In the end, I cannot see this being a debate…I predict Rodgers will go down as the greatest of all-time if he does not get hurt. He should have at least three titles, three MVPs, and 25+ miles passing (45,000+ yards).

    • Nick S says:

Let’s not forget(and I was guilty of this as well)Favre had 2 and 1/2 MVPs. Somehow, maybe because we always put Brett on such a pedestal we all started calling it 3. He shared one with Barry Sanders. I think there should a movement to correct this error and we should ALL start calling him Brett Favre 2 and 1/2 time MVP. Otherwise I totatly agree with your post.

      • Don says:

So does the record book show Barry Sanders as win 1/2 MVP or 1, which evey way you look at it Favre has 3 MVP’s the NFL’s records it as 1 MVP for each player

  4. KM Harrington says:

For me, I can’t make that prediction right now. I can’t for several reasons: one being Aaron Rodgers hasn’t been in the league for as long as others and two both are vastly different in how they play the game and their styles of play.

I have always enjoyed watching Favre play the game, he is one of the best qb’s in the Super Bowl Era. He’ll go down with the greats like Steve Young, John Elway and even Dan Marino. Speaking of that, if you base how great a qb is because of Super Bowls, then Dan Marino wouldn’t be in that category. I do know that it does have some to do with winning games and winning Super Bowls does help how great a player is.

Favre has done things recently that may not necessarily been the greatest. It is too bad the way he exited the game but in all honesty, I still think he will be a first ballot hall of fame. I know the voters will look at both the tangibles and the intagibles.

I am also confident that Rodgers will be a high profile qb like Favre was. Rodgers does have that innate sense and has qualities that Favre didn’t have. It’s going to be interesting and cool to see how Rodgers does throughout his career.

  5. joel says:

ok first of all wanna say that i am a die hard, and when i say die hard, i mean over 75% of my house is decorated in packers and i live and die with every win and loss. will be hard to find a more devoted fan. its amazing to me how these articles like this come out and everything is based on opinion not fact. i have been watching packer football since i was a little kid and was watching it in the so called dark hole before favre got there. favre single handedly took over a horrible team and immidiately made them contenders. check back in all the years favre played in greenbay how many times he battled through injuries and all sort of obsticles but look and see how many loosing seasons he had, maybe 1 or 2. and that was on some really bad teams. they only one because of favres heroics. take favre out of the picture and you would have this years colts, getting killed every week. dont get me wrong i love aaron rodgers, he seems to be a good guy, good head on his shoulders, and yes he has a superbowl, which i will get to that in a minute. but, unlike favre, aaron rodgers was in fact handed the keys to one of the most talented teams in packers history, and with that, he starts his first season with the same team a 40 year old favre just went just went 12-4 on and rodgers goes 5-11. that team was so talented that even this past superbowl season when rodgers missed a game due to concussion, his back up flynn starts the game against a very dominate patriots team and damn near gets a victory. now when rodgers came back packers caught lightning in a bottle and went on to win the superbowl. the back to back years favre went to superbowl packers were dominate both years going 12-4 and 13-3. also when favre won the three mvp’s it was because there wasnt a better player in the game, he was magical, everyone loved to watch favre play cause they knew they were watching something special. there is an awesome clip of video that shows randy moss in the middle of a game getting up at the end of one of the many battles between minnisota and greenbay, where he walks to the sideline and says, and i quote..”i gotta watch this, its brett favre on the field”..to get those kinda comments from a rival it tells you something. there never be another player in the nfl that loved the game more than favre. now as far as the whole stupid argument about whos better based on superbowl rings. this is stupidest argument of all, we are talking about good quarterbacks not teams. favre has a ring, so does rodgers. but that means nothing in the matter of who is better. give favre this same team in his prime and i guarentee you he has a couple more….but lets look at ring counts. trent dilfer, brad johnson, both have a ring as starting quarterback in superbowl, troy aikman has three. neither of those guys could hold dan marinos jock strap as far as being great quarterbacks, but yet marino does not have a ring. as far as accuracy, and great quarterback play, aikman cant hold aaron rodgers jock strap, but yet he is a legend with 3 superbowl rings, but that does not make him a better qb. like i said you cant count rings as who is better, cause if that were the case you could say that brad johnson or trent dilfer is as good as favre or rodgers which is a laughable statement. like i said though, i love rodgers, the packers are in good hands with him and he made a great transition from taking over for a legend, and a lot of people have forgotten just how great favre was due to all the crap that has gone on over past few years, but dont even start the debate of who was better until rodgers has been the starter and have at least 13 winning seasons and has played a hell of a lot longer.

    • Anthony says:

Well said! Brett Favre to me is still the best QB to play the game. I am glad Rodger’s is having a future Hall of Fame career as well. When you watch someone play a game a day after their Father passes away; shows love, toughness, and heart. No other QB has played through what Favre has.

      • wkozak says:

I agree with the above. Favre was exciting and almost single handedly took a horrible team and carried it on his back for 16 years. Rodgers is not fun to watch unless you are a Packers fan (some of the most spoiled fans on planet earth after the past 20 years of Favre driven sucess), took over a 13-3 team in an era where 4,000 yard passing seasons are all to common and hitting the QB is no longer allowed. You can’t really compare the two at this point, Rodgers is just not worthy yet.

  6. Melanie says:

This is no debate, they are totally different QBs. They are totally different players. They are totally different TEAMS. Favre did so much more, with so much less for so many years. The Packers management didn’t start to stock the team with great talented TE & WR until the end of his career. Could you even imagine the numbers Favre could have had, if he had this talent around him in his prime ?

Everyone always said that Favre made everyone else on the team better. Today, I think it’s the WR & TE that are making Rodgers better.

    • Max Smart says:

There is a debate, wake up you are part of it and it is legitimate albeit a little early as you can’t compare careers until they’re over. However you can compare any QB’s of a similar era. Favre had so much less talent? The teams Favre had in 96 and 97 were beasts. Plenty of quality receivers and tight ends, great running game and one of the best defenses in the NFL. He never made it to the Super Bowl with average talent, total B.S. With all of the injuries last season Rodgers won a Super Bowl with less talent than Favre had. Look at the statistics. Rodgers is head and shoulders above Favre in every category. He is more accurate, makes better decisions(interceptions), runs better. Avoids the rush better, dissects defenses and blitzes better. Rodgers hasn’t been around as long as Favre, but he is smarter, more self critical and more committed to winning than Favre ever was. Favre should have played better than he did as his career progresses, but he didn’t because he was so self satisfied with his own performance. Favre never made decisions as well as Rodgers and lost a lot of games with poor choices, not poor receivers. You are ignorant if you think the receivers do more to help Rodgers than he does to help them. He is one of the most accurate passers to ever play in the NFL. Do you remember how many quick slants that Favre through that almost go his receivers killed? Have you seen Rodgers do that? Brett Favre is a Hall of Fame quarterback. He was very good for a while. Aaron Rodgers plays a better game than Brett ever did. If he continues to perform any where near he has so far by the end of his career there will be no discussion about Rodgers and Favre we will be talking about Rodgers as the best to ever play the position. That is how he has performed up to this point. Better first 4 seasons than any quarterback in the history of the NFL. Rodgers is better than Favre and has the potential to be one of the all time greats. If you can’t see that in how this kid has played since he started in the league, you don’t no much about quarterback or football.

      • Tbonustomus says:

Since you’re trying to talk factual why don’t you look at the number of receivers, running backs, tight ends and line men Brett Favre played with. The numbers are staggering! He was alway working with a team in a rebuilding process and still won games. Rodgers is good but will not last long unless he has the protection of manning and aikman. There is NO comparison! They are different quarterbacks period! Give Brett Favre a team that could protect him and you don’t see a Brett Favre! He was best under pressure. Brett has earned his respect for 20 years! I’ll leave you with this final fact! Brett Favre has won more games than ANYBODY to EVER step on the field! He is a legend!

        • Adam says:

Rodgers is very comparable to favre, favre had one of the greatest superbowl teams ever where as rodgers had 15 players on IR no Running game, no finley he played stats wise better than most qbs in nfl history and then won the bowl and was mvp something favre never got. Rodgers has the highest passer rating in nfl history and the lowest ints for where he stands in tds. He is on pace to break most nfl single season records and has already destroyed favres stats in the first 4 years in comparison. He is better at throwing, accuracy, movement and judgement. If he continues this pace for another say 10 years at 38 he will have easily broken every record favre ever had and then some (except ints)

  7. Geordynne says:

What kinda questionis this obviously Rodgers is a hell of a lot better than Favre. He won the Superbowl last season and was the MVP!!! And we are undeadfted this year. 7-0… Rodgers is unstoppable! RODGERS ALL THE WAY BABY!(:

  8. packermom47 says:

Wow!! I can’t believe it. Finally found a journalist I AGREE with! Awesome and true article. Keep up the excellent work.

  9. Nick S says:

Brett only won 2 and 1/2 MVP’s. He should be refered to as Brett Favre 2 and 1/2 time MVP winner. He split one with Barry Sanders.

  10. Dazzle says:

When you compare Farve to Rodgers, you are really comparing apples to oranges and I will tell you why. Rodgers sat on the bench for 3 years and learned. When he finally came in to play, he came in to a stellar supporting cast, therefore, Rodgers didn’t/doesn’t have to take any risks to win. He is protected well and has plenty of time to locate several passing recipents. Farve, on the other hand & because of his ability, could make ordinary pass receivers look good because of his ability to thread the needle (throw a precision pass). No one heard of Sidney Rice before Farve arrived in MN. See what I mean? Don’t get me wrong, both are excellent quarterbacks, but Farve did not have the complete team that Rodgers has. Right now I would say Rodgers is more like Bart Starr and Farve is more like Fran Tarkenton. If Rodgers continues to stay healthy, he will join Farve in the hall (along with Starr and Tarkenton).

  11. Jake says:

As a MN resident and former Viking fan (but not one of the douche bag viking fans that we seem to have too many of), I am jealous. So I solved it, I became a Packer fan 3 weeks ago. I saw the Farve diva crap as a Vike fan and yeah it is ugly, but man he made that team two years ago, even if he threw the bad pass. You can’t forget what he gave you and I am glad some fans aren’t. I really think it disingenuous to turn on him.

That being said, the new guy is pretty good, I can’t stand it, so go green and gold.

  12. Pack fan in MN says:

I have to disagree with some on here saying Favre is the better QB. Granted Favres all time numbers are huge in consideration. However when you think back to the teams Favre played on and compare to what Rodgers has now. Favre CLEARLY had the better teams.

Some will say it’s the other way around but here’s my proof. Favre had how many Pro Bowlers and Hall of Famers around him on both sides of the ball? Favre also had a better Oline and a better run game! Rodgers has only a handful of Pro Bowlers and zero HOF’s!

Rodgers doesnt have a Keith Jackson or a Reggie White or a LeRoy Butler or a Dorsey Levens! Rodgers has a fill in the gap Oline and a declining Donald Driver as well as Finley for a TE who in most games is nonexistent! Rodgers does more for the Packers on offense then Favre EVER has!

Rodgers has broken EVERY single single game record Favre held except fumbles/lost and Int’s, which Old Chuck a Punt can keep!

Rodgers will not let his ego get in the way of team decisions as Favre did when it came draft time year after year after year! I’m amazed Favre wasnt canned 3-4 years prior to the retirement crap.

Rodgers tore apart the leagues #1 defense in the Superbowl, Favre sucked in both Superbowls and is a pedestrian 13-11 in post season play with 30 Int’s! That’s HORRIBLE 30 Int’s people in 24 games, Favres NOT a clutch player he chokes in big games and could NEVER beat Dallas in Dallas.

Favre was a pill popping, alcoholic, womanizer who likes to send coq shots to women that want nothing to do with him.

I knew Favre when he has a steak house in Milwaukee, my old roommate was his head bartender and just every time Favre came to town to check up on the place my buddy let me know.

I’ve drank with Brett many times and let me tell you, he IS everything I just said about him and possibly worse. Deanna had breast cancer and Brett’s out sleeping around. He is/was a dog and so was Chumura. Those two laid more pipe in Milwaukee than the local pipe fitters union!

There’s a reason the Packers brass don’t want to allow Judas into the Packers Hall of Fame, he is a traitor and a back stabber and not a good representation of what the Packers Organizations stands for!

Rodgers or Favre in his prime in a Superbowl or any given Sunday for that matter. Rodgers hands down bar none is the better QB, smarter, better arm, more accurate, quicker on his feet, more elusive and doesnt force the play!

The Superbowl MVP speaks for itself with Rodgers breaking records left and right, Rodgers provided stays healthy will be one of the BEST EVER!

Also Favre isnt even the Packers best QB, Starr is and will be until Rodgers can win a few more SB’s! GO PACK GO!

  13. Edward says:

I cannot now, nor do I believe I will ever forgive Favre for betraying the Packer fans by deviously moving to the Vikings. So debating who is the greater quarterback will always be a biased opinion for me. That said, Rodgers needs to stand the test of time to surpass Favre, but he does not have to surpass his numbers. I could easily claim Rodgers is a greater quarterback with one more Super Bowl or three more years playing at his current level. League MVP’s are virtually meaningless to me as that distinction has too many variables to make it a litmus test.

  14. Heath says:

It is premature to ask a hypothetical question about two players who are from different eras and don’t play each other. (Who’s styles are vastly different also.) I agree that A-Rod is doing good so far this season. A 7-0 start is nothing to scoff at. 2010 SuperBowl XLV MVP anyone? Does anyone else smell a 2011 season NFL MVP of the year title coming? I do agree with others that he still has more time to put in before we start the debate as to who the better QB is. But he is doing a pretty heck of a job.
But two impressive feats by Farve are his consecutive starts, (Who will ever top that?) and Farve’s length of time in the NFL. These two things alone should be considered because they had major roles to play in all of this.
Brett Farve and Aaron Rodgers both have won their rings around the same amount of time, 4 years for Farve and 5 years for Rodgers. They both posses a certain trait of qualities that makes their teammates play at a higher level all around them.
Farve’s exit is a non issue here. That should not be factored on to the football field since it was never played out there. I, like other Packer fans, also thought that it was all a bunch of BS. Everyone could have handled it better and acted like grown ups, but, well… we seen what happened. No use in crying over spilled milk.
Stats are only numbers recorded. They don’t tell the tale of the plays. They don’t talk of the wins or losses. They don’t tell us who the made the plays of the games. And they definitely don’t tell us of football greatness.
One thing about football greatness… Greatness is NOT only measured with a ring or numbers. It is measured with the memorable plays all football players make. Greatness is measured with the heroics that every QB makes for their team. They are the leaders. They lead their teams to victories. In other words… their jobs. What we the people, The Fans, pay them to do. Because of that, it is measured with what us fans remember about these football greats. We decide who to remember and why. Because we are the ones who keep this memory alive. We the fans speak of the plays. We converse with one another around the watercooler. We text each other about the games. We talk to our spouses, our families, siblings, our kids, our grand kids- all those youth who need to carry these memories forward to the next generation. We were told by our older generations about those past plays and players. It comes full circle.
We watch the players, the game and the analysts. If we don’t watch who are they going to perform for? Who are they going to talk to? This is the American way of life! This is OUR proud past time!
For me, there is no comparison between these two… for the simple reason they both are champions playing on championship teams. If we are to ask a question such as this, wouldn’t we be asking the same moronic question of which $100.00 bill is better – the 1996 or the 2010 editions? They are both worth the same value – A lot!!!!
So who is the better QB? Who really cares!? They, like us fans, bled Green and Gold. Go Pack Go!!!

  15. Shavager says:

First off, let me CORRECT your info: the pass intercepted by Eagles in the plaoff game was NOT to Ferguson–the pass was to Jarvon Walker–play called was the SAME play Walker scored TD in the Raiders game after Favre’s dad died. Walker CUT to middle of field after ball was released–Favre HAD NO BLAME for Walker breaking off the play leaving only Eagle defenders to intercept the ball. Both coach Mike Sherman and Favre confirmed Walker ran away from the route called for. From Bart Starr to Brett Favre it was 30 years of Packers fans futility, no championships, not even NFC titles. Favre brought an atmosphere of winning no other QB had given them consistently in the 30 years after Starr. Yes there was Scott Hunter-reliable but not a great winner, Lynn Dickey–lot of yards, TDs but fragile, Don Majkowski-Majic man’s magic faded after injuries and Favre emerging. Favre was a dominant QB in the Holmgren years, Sherman, Ray Rhodes did not keep his gambling habits in check. At the time of his MVP awards, no QB in the league had better success, he was a warrior on the field playing thru injuries other QB’s would be sidelined for. He owns practically all QB records due to his iron man play and an arm strong as any that ever played the game. Packers fans should feel fortunate to have two QB’s of Favre, Rodgers’ capability, 30 years of futility was a long time for any fans to suffer.

    • mikeonbass says:

It doesnt matter who the pass was thrown to. The pass was thrown up in the air like a “punt”. The only guy standing under it was Brian Dawkins. He waited at least 3-4 seconds for it to come down in his arms. I should also mention his arm wasnt hit when he threw it either. It was just a typical DUMB pass that helped build Brett’s legacy as we know it today.

  16. Shavager says:

P.S. guys, Rodgers has a BETTER talented team than Favre ever had except for the SB ’96 team, that team fell off in talent and veteran players in ’97. The quality on this years Packers team excells that of any team Favre played with except the SB team. Had Sterling Sharpe not retired due to injuries, Packers had reliable runner like Ahman Green longer and Reggie White had more D-line help against Denver in ’97 Packers might have been repeat winners. I fault Holmgren for being too self-important with pressure on Packers mangmt. to give him general manager duties for his lack of preparation on schemes to beat Broncos, his team was not as focused and overconfident against a team whose O-line was nearly 100 lbs a man lighter than the Packers D-line. Holmgren’s decision to allow T. Davis to score TD in fourth qtr, plus failure of refs to call illegal hands play against O-line player blocking in front of Davis’ TD cost GB the opportunity to repeat. This is a game where Holmgren put his personal ambition above the success of the team and a reason I was glad to see him go to Seahawks.

  17. MikeonBass says:

I see alot of posts from young people who claim Brett Favre rescued the Packers from oblivion in the early 90′s. Truth is – the Packers have existed since the mid 20′s and regardless of records or who was playing quarterback the stadium was sold out every sunday. There was no rescue. The name of the team is the Green Bay Packers not the Brett Favre Packers as some people mistakenly believed. I would also like to add it was Holmgren who made a quarterback out of him after several attempts. His career was going nowhere in Atlanta and they were pinching themselves they got a 1st round draft choice for him. He didnt exactly come riding in on a big white horse.
You know its funny. Three short years ago many of the bloggers who (Now again)claim to be Packer fans were attending the pre-season practices holding up signs “Rodgers Sucks”, “We want Brett” and “Death to Ted Thompson”. Reports of young people spitting at Rodgers as he entered and left the field were numerous.

Having said all that -the article is very factual and objective. I agree completely.

    • Notsofast says:

When people claim Brett Favre rescued the Packers from oblivion in the early 90′s, they are not saying he is the reason the stadium filled. Everyone knows Packer fans are true to their team and will always support them, win or lose. But you have to admit that he brought excitement and life back to the Packers. You knew that with Brett playing, there was always a change to win. As for Atlanta, Jerry Glanville hated Brett. You say his career there was going nowhere in Atlanta? He had 5 passing attempts! Atlanta’s QB was Chris Miller whose best season was…. you guessed it… 1991. Miller threw for over 3000 yards and 26 touchdowns. Favre was young and needed to be molded and Mike Holmgren did just that. So what. That’s what coaches do. In 1991, the Packers record was 4-12. Favre started the 4th game and the team went 9-7 with a rookie QB. Btw.. the Packers lost the 1st 2 games that season. Here’s some more stats for you.. 1990: 6-10, 1989: 10-6, 1988: 4-12, 1987: 4-9-1, 1986: 4-12. You can go look at the stats after Favre became QB. Much more impressive. Favre was the best thing to come to Green Bay in a long time and you dog him. He has 2 losing seasons. You Sir are just an angry man. As for Rodgers.. he is great and at times truly amazing, but it’s too soon to compare.

I haven’t been angry since Farve airmailed the Giants into the Super Bowl. Truth is, when Thompson traded him to the Jets I went out and bought myself a steak dinner. I got tired him single-handidly throwing playoff games away since Holmgren left. Its one thing to lose the big game but quite another to just throw it away with picks that not even he can explain. Its one thing to look like Steve Young during the regular season and turn into Bubby Brister in the playoffs. You can call that “dogging” him if you choose – I deem it calling a “spade a spade”.
This article very eloquently depicts his history and legacy. I happen to agree with it. Have a nice day kid!

Duh Aaron Rodgers. Come on if you don’t realize Aaron Rodgers is a better quartertback than you need glasses, hearing aids or a hard smack on the head to get back to reality.

This is absurd. Rodgers is just the flavor of the week. Favre will always be the GOAT.

  20. Adam1984 says:

Rodgers hands down is better. Ill explain why.. Favre had a dream team for his superbowl year, rodgers had 15 starters on IR no RB for most of the year and no finley his #1 target and still one it not to mention had one of the best games stats wise by a qb in playoff history and one of the greatest performances in sb history also won mvp. Rodgers has the all time highest passer rating in nfl history for a career ( yes those can change but doubtful when you see how rodgers is playing) He has the lowest ints to td ratio in nfl history. He has won 13 straight games and is leading the league in almost every stat. He is the only qb to ever have consectutive 4000 yrd seasons. Rodgers has better stats all around then favre did in a 3- 1/2 year comparison. Rodgers is better period, the people who say you cant compare the two are wrong. Any qb can be compared to any qb it is one job and its about who is better at it. At rodgers pace he will have broken every nfl qb record in the history of the nfl he is already at a faster pace then any qb to ever play the game. The only record he wont have will be favres Ints and consecutive starts. Favre was great rodgers is a god

ummm old brett favre > aaron rodgers … Vikes raped the pack in 2009 and 2010 doesn’t even count cuz our offensive line crippled him

  22. garret says:

This is funny really. Some people forget how good favre was and how dominant the packers were at home with Brett. Is Rodgers playing great? Of course. Alot of people think its just automatic that Rodgers continues on this path and that no adversity will set in? Favre had only 1 LOSING season in 16 or17yrs in GB. Yes Rodgers did alot with the talent he had last year. But the competiton was weaker that he faced than when Favre was in his prime.

  23. Jim says:

Although Aaron’s success is impressive and I agree with those how say he is the best QB in the NFL. I would caution the comparison to Brett as I would Brett to Bart. Three great players that we Packer fans have been blessed to have lead our team. Will Aaron be considered the best of the three somewhere down the road? Only time will tell but the achievements of the other two have set the bar pretty high for Aaron over the long haul. Go Pack!!
