Will The Green Bay Packers Retain Jermichael Finley?
2012 didn’t get off to as good of a start as 2011 did for the Green Bay Packers. The Packers have already equaled their loss total from last year after Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the New York football Giants. The game was a culmination of poor execution, missed timing and bad luck. There’s a few issues to deal with on defense, but the big issue on offense revolves around potential superstar tight end Jermichael Finley. Will the Packers retain him?
Finley has all the tools to be in the same class as Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski, but his play rarely reflects that. The 24 year old is probably the most frustrating player to watch on the Packers. You can see the potential oozing out of him, but always leaves something on the table. Since he’s an unrestricted free agent, the Packers have the choice of using the franchise tag instead of extending him immediately.
I know a lot of Packers fans are down on Finley. Fans whose opinion I hold in high regard want him gone. I just hate to see someone with that much potential leave. Outside of Finley, GB has no known threat at tight end. Why eliminate a potential weapon?
Finley has the best hands on the team, but there’s something mentally not right at this time. Give the guy another year to figure it out and if he doesn’t, then GB should cut its losses. I expect the Packers to use the tag on Finley or even agree to a reasonable extension. The drops hurt a lot, but losing a potential star will hurt even more.

Last year they won it all, this year Finley was involved, guess what, drop drop drop drop drop drop, get the picture? If the guy can’t play when the pressure is on, trad e him for a high draft pick. In the kc game he dropped numerous third down throws, wound up punting and ultimately loosing the first game of the year. Green bays coaching staff should have involved him on early downs and that’s it. But I still love the green and gold and driver is still exciting to watch, so I hope he stays.
Thompson needs to bring Finley in for contract talks right now, show him and agent game film on how bad he played in 2nd half of season before negotiating. Packers not likely to let him walk unless the price is too high, would NOT franchise him unless Quarless can’t heal and return to form. “Finley has best hands on the team” is baloney, anyone watching him this season can see he lets too many balls go through hands and off his body-cost Rodgers a INT against Giants in the season game. He lacks focus and concentration, was a big weak link in passing game when MUST HAVE completions were on the line, HE CHOKED. Like JJones last year, he has to improve to earn support from fans regardless of what McCarthy, Thompson decide.
