The Green Bay Packers have released defensive end Jarius Wynn as the first of 10 cuts the team must make by Monday afternoon.

Wynn’s release comes as a bit of a surprise considering the potential the fourth year player has. Much was expected of Wynn after defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins left the team via free agency and Mike Neal battled injuries. He responded well last season with 19 tackles and three sacks in 16 games with the Packers. However, the production was not where it needed to be, as he did not turn into the dynamic pass rusher Green Bay expected of him.

The Packers made the necessary decision to bring in multiple linemen this offseason because of the struggles in 2011. After Green Bay drafted Jerel Worthy in the second round and Mike Daniels in the fourth round in this year’s draft, it was clear players such as Wynn had their time in a Packers uniform numbered.

Worthy, Daniels, and Daniel Muir have high expectations to be consistent pass rushers. Considering Wynn’s inability to stop the run, consistently get to the quarterback and not do much in training camp to give the team reason to keep him, there clearly was no way he was going to make it past Monday’s cuts.

Wynn intercepted quarterback Aaron Rodgers in training camp and recorded one tackle this preseason. With his job on the line and competition brought into camp, he played as if his spot on the 53-man roster was guaranteed. The one thing players have learned in Green Bay is that no one’s job is safe unless you are the league’s reining MVP. The Packers have never been afraid to keep younger guys who show more in camp, as opposed to bringing back proven veterans.

There is a very good chance Wynn will be picked up by another team within the next couple weeks considering he has plenty left in the tank and has shown the ability to compete at a high level. Unfortunately, his work ethic was not good enough for a team making a legitimate run at another Super Bowl.
