After 13 seasons in the NBA, Indiana Pacers center Jeff Foster has announced his retirement. Foster, a member of Indiana’s 2000 Eastern Conference championship team, spent his entire career with the Pacers. Foster has been battling various injuries over the past few seasons, and has been sidelined for most of this season, due to a lagging back injury. Foster previously had season-ending back surgery in 2010.

A first-round draft pick in 1999, Foster played over 750 games in his career, but only played two full seasons without missing time due to injury. Foster tried to fight his way back to the court, but has decided to hang it up, after playing in only 11 games this season. The 13-year veteran has only played in 83 games over the past three seasons.

Jeff Foster was never a big stat player, but more of a facilitator. His long 6’11” frame and his tenacious defensive tendencies helped Jeff to earn the nickname “Feisty Foster” from the Indiana faithful. The feisty one gained some notoriety last season, during Indiana’s playoff series against the Chicago Bulls. Foster was called out by Chicago media, and even NBA Hall of Famer Scotty Pippen, for what was considered “thuggish” play and hard fouls by the Pacers. Indiana lost the series 4-1, but made an impression and sparked a renewed rivalry against the Bulls.

Larry Bird, Pacers President of Basketball Operations, spoke on Wednesday about Foster’s retirement. “Jeff has meant a lot to the team and the community for 13 seasons. He played hard every night. He always gave his all. He is a great role model for our younger players, and we can’t thank him enough for his contributions on and off the court.”
