NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Calls Frustrated Colts Fan to Answer Questions About Lockout

While the players and owners have been struggling to deal with the NFL lockout, the argument can be made it’s the fans that have been the most frustrated about the way things are being handled. One Indianapolis Colts fan has become so frustrated about the lockout–it earned him a personal call from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell himself.

Colts fan Nate Dunlevy–who runs the popular site 18to88.com–was contacted by a member of the league office last week about Goodell getting in touch with him to address some issues regarding the lockout. Goodell recently held a conference call with Colts season ticket holders to discuss issues such as whether or not Indianapolis would miss out on hosting the 2012 Super Bowl due to the lockout. However, Dunlevy told ESPN’s Paul Kuharsky that the call was a “waste of time” as most of the questions had nothing to do with the lockout and wasn’t afraid to express his frustrations as a long-time season ticket holder to the internet world–which is why Goodell contacted him.

Dunlevy recently discussed how Goodell called him Monday morning and took the time to answer questions personally about the lockout. Goodell realizes how frustrated the fans are about the lockout and is doing whatever it takes to make the situation better–to the point where he’s apparently willing to make personal house calls. Here’s part of Dunlevy’s article regarding his conversation with Goodell from 18to88.com:

I asked Mr. Goodell if there was any aspect of the NFL’s conduct during the negotiations that he regretted, if there was anything he would have done differently, if there was any culpability to be shared by the league for the current state of affairs.  He responded that no, while obviously he has given considerable thought as to what could be done to get a a deal accomplished, he felt the NFL had behaved appropriately.  He said that one always runs back over such negotiations searching for what could have been done differently, but that he did not believe there was anything that could have been changed. He then expressed frustration at the fact that the discussions were taking place in a courtroom rather than in mediated settlement talks.

There’s a popular saying in the world of sports writing how you never know who may come across your articles and Dunlevy probably never expected to receive a personal call from Goodell after venting his frustrations–which makes this a pretty interesting story. Be sure to check out the rest of Dunlevy’s article by clicking here to see what else he asked Goodell about the lockout.

One Rant to “NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Calls Frustrated Co...”

Judging from Goodell’s comments to Mr. Dunlevy the massive investment made by Indianapolis to insure an exceptional Super Bowl experience is not going to be a much of a priority. Surprise!

The people of Indianapolis have much more on the line here than any NFL or Colt fan. This is real money being spent here Mr. Goodell. The economic impact of canceling or even delaying a few years the hosting of the Super Bowl will impact more Indianapolis citizens more greatly than the billionaire owneres and millionaire players of the NFL.

Jim Irsay, Indianapolis paid up front for the Stadium and the improvements for the Super Bowl. I, at least, expect you and yours to your honor end of the bargain and shame on you if you don’t. And Mr. Goodell, deeds not words.
