Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning Bothered by Neck Problems; Will Manning’s Streak End in 2011?
According to a report on ESPN.com, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has been bothered by neck pain throughout the offseason.
He had surgery to correct a bulging disk in his neck on May 23rd but when he took the field at the Manning Passing Academy (a traditional workout session with a number of college quarterbacks), he served as just an instructor, instead of participating in the drills.
Manning said he had “no idea” when he will be able to participate in training camp until he gets an assessment from Erin Barill, the therapist for the Colts. Manning has been rehabbing with other therapists.
This marked the second straight offseason in which Manning underwent surgery on his neck. In March of 2010, his surgery eradicated a buildup of calcium in his neck. This year’s surgery corrected a bulging disk.
Manning has played in 208 consecutive regular season games, as well as 19 postseason games–every single game since he joined the NFL in 1998.
He never implied that he will miss the start of the 2011 season, or any time at all, but a 35-year old quarterback who is coming off of a neck surgery for the second straight offseason and clearly isn’t comfortable participating in workout drills just two months before the season begins cannot be a good sign for Indianapolis Colts fans.
Manning is 89 starts away (more than five seasons) from tying the consecutive games played streak by former Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre, who retired after the 2010 season. Even if Favre chooses to return for a 21st season, his streak is over because of injuries that caused him to miss a pair of games late last season.
If I was a Colts fan, I would be very concerned to hear the news about Peyton Manning. He is, after all, more important to the success of the Indianapolis Colts than any player is to his respective team in the entire National Football League.
