Rumor has it that Colts owner, Jim Irsay has came out and said that he wants to draft “Pro ready” Andrew Luck from Stanford.

Andrew Luck is a phenomenal quarterback and what he can bring to the Colts would be a great deal. However, is that the right move? They already have Peyton Manning, a future Hall of Famer. Sure Manning is up there in age at 35 and if they draft Luck they would have the future franchise QB. But lets think about the possibilities that could happen with that number one pick. There are a lot of  teams that are in need of good quarterbacks and many of these teams would probably trade up to get Luck.

What if Irsay and the Colts traded the number one pick for multiple first and second round picks. Lets be honest, the Colts need help everywhere on the field. What if they were to take that number one pick and trade it to a team that would be willing to give up other draft picks. In doing so, the Colts could get a few different players for their needs and not just a great quarterback. I am sure a team would be willing to give up a couple of first and second draft picks. In doing so the Colts could start to rebuild their team with talented guys. The need help on both lines, linebackers, secondary, and receivers. They could address those issues with trading the number one pick. Another thought is, what if Andrew Luck is a bust? Have we forgotten about Ryan leaf? Now, I believe he is not going to be a bust, but can you honestly put all your hope in this guy. He hasn’t even seen a complicated defense yet. He also hasn’t even made it to the combine yet and many people are putting him in the hall of fame already. In my honest opinion I believe this kid will be great, but don’t the Colts need more than a backup plan for Manning?

If the unforseen happens and the Colts let Manning go due to his neck injury, there is a young quarterback that has been waiting to get a fair shot. He sits behind a gunsslinger in Green Bay. Matt Flynn will be a free agent this year. If you are the Colts why not sign this guy through free agency and trade your pick down and sign 5 to 8 good, solid, football players. Then they could actually build a team versus putting all your faith in a kid that hasn’t done anything in the NFL.

Totally Agree with what your wrote….

  2. Alex says:

What idiot would trade the number one pick? Manning is 35 and he’s only one hit away from a career ending injury. I know that they will draft Luck with this pick and put him under center for next season. If Manning were smart, he would know he had a great career and retire before he gets traded to another team that will give to much up for him.

  3. Christopher Batchelder says:

Trading the number one pick would be against many fans wishes, however it would be more beneficial for the team to get back to the top. Would you agree with that?

I remember the 49ers releasing Joe Montana because they said “he was done” and he played another three years. Manning probably has three to five more seasons left.

I do agree with your comments, Luck is a polished quarterback for a college player. I just think they need to try to fix other issues and not just the quarterback.

Would you like to see Andrew Luck as the number one pick or RG3?
