The recent news on Twitter and other social media sites is the idea of veteran, franchise quarterback Peyton Manning going to the Washington Redskins. Many have said this would be a horrible idea for both parties involved but lets think about this for a minute.

Manning  is 35 and coming off a season when he did not play a single down and Washington who, lets be honest here, has Rex Grossman as their quarterback. Mike Shanahan has been known to take older quarterbacks and help them get a championship. Also with the “money is not an option” owner that Daniel Snyder is, he would be willing to pick up Manning’s contract. I would bet Manning has three to five years remaining on his playing days and with a new offense and new city, he may believe that situation to be the best for him.

In this case, what does that mean for the Colts?

That would open the doors for Andrew Luck and come into Indianapolis, without  question, as a starter. I believe this is the best option if they take Luck as the number one pick and plan on starting him. They need to ship Manning away and who better than the team that throws money around. The Redskins would be able to handle his lucrative contract.  If they keep Manning and draft Luck, it will be a circus and I am sure the team does not want to deal with that.

If that does happen, is Jim Caldwell safe?

If actions fall into place where Manning is traded and the Colts draft Luck, Caldwell is fired. They need a coach in there that will mold Luck into an NFL quarterback. A hardnosed guy, a guy that will show this young quarterback a direction. Maybe  Jon Gruden, or Bill Cowher or even Marty Schottenheimer would be an effective leader for Luck.

When Jim Irsay fired the Polians, he put his foot down almost to say, enough is enough, and with new leadership comes new attitude. The Colts are changing every day, and this is just another change that needs to happen.

8 Rants to “Manning to Washington; To Make Room For Luck”

  1. Melissa says:

Or, they trade away the number one pick for multiple 1st and 2nd round picks, keep Manning, get some actual players and go on their merry way.

    • Christopher Batchelder says:

Yes, I also agree with that. Check my other blogs out I have also talked about that idea too. But, wouldn’t you want a new young quarterback?

  2. Aurelio Sanchez says:

It’s incredibly foolish and naive to believe that a hall of famer like Peyton Manning just rolls off the assembly line like a new car, in the person of Andrew Luck. If it was that easy, the Colts could have taken Ryan Leaf and where would they be now? Yes, but it would have been much sooner, and the team would never have compiled the best league record from 1997-2007, including a Super Bowl. Manning succeeded because of his incredible work ethic, putting in the time on and off the field, his unrivaled leadership, his unparalled physical talents, his loyalty and dedication to franchise and fans, and now, without even giving him the opportunity to show whether he can mount a successful comeback, those same fans want to throw him out like yesterday’s newspaper. It’s a sad commentary on football, the NFL, Indy and fans. I vote to retain the greatest quarterback in the history of the game getting the chance to show once more what he’s made of.

I love your comments and you were very informative about this situation. I agree how can you just replace Manning? It is a decision that is very hard to make. I have talked about this in my earlier blog, please check it out and feel free to comment on it.

Love the comments, keep them coming.

  3. joeyjust4u2 says:

Draft a Quarterback, there are a few coming out for the draft, select the best one at our number 6 pick

    • Christopher Batchelder says:

Do you think RG3 will still be available? Would you like him as your teams Q.B?

      • stangmark says:

IF UR RIGHT, and the colts are smart and keep peyton, then the smartest thing to do is trade the #1 pick for as many picks as they can swing—snyder’s the smart money for being willing to sacrifice the most. pick up a couple of young stud OT’s and defensive players and you’ve got a play-off ready team. the skins then take luck and become almost an instant wildcard team, at the very least. on the flipside, yes, it is likely that luck is ready made to contend; it only depends on the rest of the team.

        • Christopher Batchelder says:

Either way one thing is for sure I would hate to make that decision. What if they passed on Luck and picked WR Blackman ? How would you feel about that?
