RUMOR: Actor Rob Lowe Says Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning is Retiring

Consider this a first, for I can’t tell you the last time I’ve heard of a major news story being reported by a TV actor.

According to a tweet by actor Rob Lowe, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is retiring.

The rumor has been denied by Manning’s agent, as well as his father Archie, a former NFL quarterback.

If the rumor is true, it would end the debate about whether the Colts should draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, as well as the debate about whether Manning will be on the Colts next season.

Manning, who turns 36 soon, missed the entire 2011 season after offseason neck surgery. This ended his streak of 208 consecutive regular season games played, the second most in history by a quarterback (Brett Favre played in 297).

He won four NFL Most Valuable Player awards during his 13-year career, and led the Colts to a Super Bowl victory following the 2006 season.

The 11-time Pro Bowler has 399 career touchdown passes, the third most in history. He also ranks in the top ten in completions (4682, 3rd), attempts (7210, 4th), completion percentage (64.9 %, 5th), yards (54828, 3rd), passer rating (94.9, 6th), fourth quarter comebacks (35, 2nd), and sack percentage (3.10 percent, 2nd). He holds the record for most average passing yards per game (263.6) and he is the only player with four MVP trophies.

For what it’s worth, I do not think that the rumor is true. I think if it was, it wouldn’t have been broken by an actor. And check out Lowe’s tweets. He clearly doesn’t have a clue.
