#5- John Elway
I know what you are thinking, what is Elway doing on this list, he wasn’t a Colt. Yes, I do know that however, he was drafted as a Colt. Elway finished his career as one of the best quarterbacks of all-time and was drafted by the Colts.
In 1983, the Colts had the first pick in the NFL draft; they drafted and traded John Elway from Stanford. They traded Elway to the Denver Broncos.
The Colts were coming off a winless season in 1982 and needed someone to lift up their franchise. They were in need of a quarterback that could lift them up much like Johnny Unitas did for them. Well, Elway wanted nothing to do with that.
John Elway refused to sign with the Colts and even threatened to go play for the Yankees since he was a college standout as a baseball player too.
On draft day in 1983 he was drafted by the Colts and was traded to the Denver Broncos. He the led the Broncos to five Super Bowls, winning two of them back to back to end his career. Many often wonder what could have been if Elway would have stayed in Baltimore. But, it wasn’t meant to be and the Indianapolis Colts did just fine when they drafted a quarterback from Tennessee.
The reason Elway is #5 is because he didn't play one down with the Colts, but was drafted so that is why he is on this list.
