There’s a new Drew on the Indianapolis Colts quarterback roster, and it’s not Andrew Luck. On Friday, Indianapolis made a trade with the New York Jets for veteran quarterback, Drew Stanton. The Colts received Stanton and a seventh round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, in exchange for a sixth round pick.

Stanton, who was selected in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft, played for the Detroit Lions before being signed as a free agent by the Jets on March 16th. Amidst the Tim Tebow trade rumors, Stanton requested a trade or release from the Jets. Not wanting to be the third ring (and third string) in the Tebow circus, Stanton and his agent decided that Drew would be better utilized in another system.

As it stands right now, Stanton is the only quarterback on the Colts roster. Indianapolis is widely expected to take quarterback Andrew Luck with the number one overall pick in the NFL Draft next month, and Luck will most likely have the starting job right away. It will be good to have Stanton as a solid back up on the depth chart, which is something the Colts lacked during the Peyton Manning era.

Indianapolis also agreed to terms with wide receiver Donnie Avery. Avery was drafted in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, and was named their Rookie of the Year. Avery suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2010, and was eventually released.

Colts general manager, Ryan Grigson, feels good about the new signings. “Donnie is a very fast wide receiver, who has had a productive past. Drew is a great acquisition for the Colts, and we are happy he’s a member of this team.”
