With the first pick in the Rant Sports 2012 NFL Mock Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select quarterback Andrew Luck. Let’s just say what needs to be said. The Colts will officially mortgage the future of their franchise, in hopes that Andrew Luck will prove to be the top-notch prodigy that he has been projected to become.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has led a year-long soap opera over what the Colts would or would not do with the Peyton Manning situation. The result of all this conflict and commentary could very well be the choosing of Andrew Luck with the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Indianapolis Colts had a league-worst 2-14 record last season. With Peyton Manning injured for the first time in his career, the Colts suffered through an unstable stable of quarterbacks, which left Indianapolis with their worst regular season record since 1998. With the departure of Peyton Manning, the Colts are in need (and are surely looking for) the future of their franchise.

The new face of the “horseshoe” will most likely be Andrew Luck. No pick in the NFL Draft is a guarantee. History will tell you that the first overall draft choice is as much of a coin flip as it is a sure thing. In the last 20 years, 12 quarterbacks have been selected with the first overall draft pick. Only six of those quarterbacks were ever selected to the Pro Bowl. Andrew Luck has been rumored to be the best looking quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning in 1998. Some pundits have even said that Luck is the most NFL-ready quarterback since John Elway was drafted in 1983.

If drafted, Luck steps into a team that has cut coaches, captains, and management since the beginning of this year. The Colts are rebuilding, and Andrew Luck could be the foundation for a new franchise. Andrew Luck is a former Johnny Unitas Award winner and a Manning Award finalist.

In 2011, Luck was also on the list of Football Academic All-America Team Members. At 6’4” and 240 pounds, Andrew Luck is a physical specimen that can stand tall behind the center position, but can also be mobile if a play breaks down. This combination of brains and brawn could prove to be potential prosperity for the Indianapolis Colts.

If selected by the Colts, Andrew Luck will be stepping into some mighty big shoes. Taking over a struggling franchise is no easy task. Taking over a struggling franchise after the exit of a Hall of Fame quarterback is almost a lose-lose situation. Andrew Luck doesn’t simply have to win to be a winner in the eyes of Indianapolis fans, he almost has to win multiple Super Bowls and NFL MVP titles. Still, if anyone can fill the void left by Peyton Manning, it just might be Andrew Luck.
