AEG Has Spoken With Jacksonville Jaguars About Relocation
AEG President Tim Leiweke told Scott Reid of the Orange County Register that his group has spoken to five NFL franchises about purchasing a majority interest and relocating to Los Angeles. One of those teams is the Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars have been contacted along with the St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders.
“St. Louis, Jacksonville, not extensively, certainly Oakland, San Diego, Minnesota are still in the mix,” Leiweke told Reid.
Leiweke said that his group is prepared to buyout any lease in order to get a team to move to Los Angeles.
The wording of Leiweke’s quote is important though. He implied that their discussions with the Rams and Jaguars have not been extensive. It also implies that they have had more in depth discussion with the Raiders, Chargers and Vikings, three teams that are currently looking for new stadiums.
At the moment it appears that the Vikings are the leading candidate for relocation. They are the only team in the NFL that is currently rearing a collapsed roof on their stadium. The state of Minnesota has also been extremely reluctant to publicly fund a new stadium for the Vikings. Their lease with the Metrodome is up after the 2011 season meaning that AEG would not have to pay any additional money to get the Vikings to move.
