Will Jaguars Tight End Marcedes Lewis Sit Out Until He Gets Long-Term Deal?
Most Jaguars players made an appearance at EverBank Field on Tuesday as the team facilities were opened up for the first time since the lockout began in March, however Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis was noticeably absent.
Tania Ganguli of The Florida Times-Union is reporting that as of Tuesday afternoon Lewis remained in Southern California where he has spent the entire off season working out.
While showing up on Tuesday was voluntary for the Jaguars players, they are scheduled to open up camp on Wednesday and all players are expected to report. The fact that Lewis remains back at home suggests that he may be a no-show for the beginning of training camp as he waits to work out a new long-term contract with the Jaguars.
Instead of letting Lewis test free agency, the Jaguars decided to give him the franchise tag back in February before the lockout began. Lewis and the Jaguars have said several times this summer that they wanted to get a long-term deal done.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Jaguars had not yet begun negotiating a new deal for their star tight end.
While Lewis has said this summer that he did not want to hold out, it appears that he will continue to stay away until he has the new deal that he wants.

Hey! Jaguars Management! Sign ML!!! Haven’t you learned ANYTHING from the lockout (and your past years’ performances?)
Sign a PROVEN PRODUCER for a change, please, please, please! Spend as much as needed; you have to reach the cap, anyway, with the new cba. Get it done! Nuf said.
Hey! Jaguars Management! Don’t you get, even now? Sign ML immediately! He’s one of the few PROVEN performers on your team! Get it done, no delay, no excuse accepted. Nuf said.
If I am not mistaken, Marcedes held out after being drafted. Then had his one big year in a contract year. And now, he’s holding out again? Something stinks here. As much as I like Marcedes and would love to see him play with the Jaguars for a long long time, I don’t like it when players “play” the system against their team.
