David Garrard will be the Jaguars quarterback when they play their season opener against the Tennessee Titans on September 11.

Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio confirmed this on Tuesday for the first time since training camp opened.

Garrard looked rusty in his first preseason action last Friday against the Atlanta Falcons, but he missed a bunch of practice early in camp with a back injury. The Jaguars coaching staff expects to see a better performance from Garrard this Saturday when they play their third preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.

There had been speculation recently that Jaguars rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert was starting to make a push for the starting quarterback job, but a shaky performance against the Falcons may have sealed his fate.

One Rant to “Jaguars Quarterback Competition Is Over”

  1. Cathi baum says:

I cannot believe that Garrard is going to be the starting QB for the Jags openner with the Titans!
Who won that last preseason game? Who went onto the field in the 4th quarter with the Falcons winning and pulled off an upset?
It wasn’t Guarrad, who played so poorly in the 1st preseason game that I thought he looked like an idiot out on that field.
I am a jag fan tried and true but Garrad has lost his edge. Since 2008 he has been inconsistent and the team suffered.
McCown is no rookie and proved it against the Falcons. He commanded respect from the opposing team and proved that he has the confidence level to go out there and kick some butt.
It was like he was the 1st string QB and David was a rookie who obviously had not thrown too many reps.
