It has only been 24 hours since the 2011 NFL season came to an end, but the odds-makers in Las Vegas have already released their odds for who next year’s Super Bowl champion will be.

Las Vegas thinks that the Jacksonville Jaguars are the longest shot to win Super Bowl XLVII.

The MGM Grand casino has the Jaguars at 150-1 odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February in their initial lines on the 2012 season.

The early betting favorite for next year is the New England Patriots, who open at 5-1 odds.

While these odds are an early assessment of how the Jaguars are viewed on a national level, they will certainly shift drastically as teams begin to sign free agents and their 2012 roster begin to take shape throughout the off-season.

First he hired a new coach, now he has announced that the Jaguars will have new uniforms in 2013.

The Jaguars are going to switch from their traditional home teal jerseys, to a new all black uniform. The Jaguars formally used black jerseys as their third jersey option, but got rid of them prior to the 2009 because former owner Wayne Weaver thought the amount of jersey options the team had muddled their identity.

The Jaguars will be one of the first teams to get a uniform makeover under the new contract the NFL has with Nike.

Last year during the lockout Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis stayed in shape by doing Mixed Martial Arts training under Fox Sports NFL reporter Jay Glazer.

Lewis followed up his off-season MMA experience by having one of the more disappointing seasons of his career. Lewis had no touchdown receptions in 2011 after signing a lucrative five-year contract worth $34 million following his 10 touchdown performance in 2010.

This week, Glazer talked to Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com and blamed Lewis’ disappointing season on distractions.

“It’s a mental game, too. He had a bunch of distractions,” Glazer said. “He was distracted from doing what he was expected to do, and he knew it, too.”

Glazer followed that up by stating that Lewis plans on continuing his MMA training this off-season.

I have no problem with Lewis taking up an off-season hobby that will keep him in peak physical condition, but only if he is Jacksonville when he needs to be during the off-season training program with the Jaguars and new head coach Mike Mularkey.

Lewis needs to become a reliable target for his young quarterback Blaine Gabbert, and showing up to the off-season camps is the perfect time to work on their chemistry.

Ever since Tim Tebow walked off the field of the Superdome in New Orleans his final time as the quarterback of the Florida Gators there has been a small and extremely vocal faction of Jaguars fans who want to see him in a Jacksonville Jaguars uniform.

These fans were upset when the Jaguars passes on the opportunity to select Tebow in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, but now they have a new voice. New Jaguars owner Shahid Khan said on local radio Monday morning that he would have taken Tebow.

“100 percent I would have. Absolutely,” Khan said when asked if he would have selected the Jacksonville native. “The first Jaguars game I came to was in ’10, we played Denver here. There were a lot more Tebow jerseys in the Jaguars stands than the teal jerseys for any player, let’s face it. You hate to get into 20/20 hindsight and finger pointing, but certainly if I had anything to do with it. We probably won’t have a chance like that again.”

Khan was so interested in the Jacksonville-Tebow question that he asked the personnel departments of both the Jaguars and Rams whether Tebow was worth a first-round pick. Neither thought that highly of Tebow, but Khan still was not sold.

“There comes a time when emotion trumps rationality,” Khan said. “And this, if I was an owner, would be one of those moments for me.”

Khan, as a businessman, sees the value in having a hometown hero as quarterback in terms of ticket sales and interest, but in the end it boils down to whether or not you can be a consistent winner with Tebow as your quarterback. In the end, winning is what ultimately gets fans in the stands and there are still major question as to whether Tebow can be a successful NFL quarterback.

Not even the Denver Broncos are sure of that, even though Tebow led them to an AFC West title this past season.

The bottom line is that the Jaguars passed on Tebow because they thought he was not worth the 10th overall pick in the draft and I believe the Jaguars organization is better off in the long term for their decision.

After the Senior Bowl last week, it is time to start taking an early look at how the NFL Draft will play out for the Jacksonville Jaguars in April.

The Jaguars once again find themselves drafting in the top 10 and certainly have several holes to fill on both sides of the ball coming off of a disappointing 5-11 season.

While the Jaguars are in desperate need of help at the wide receiver position, I cannot see a scenario in which the Jaguars draft a pass catcher with their first round pick. At this point in the process, it appears the only receiver worth taking in the top 10 picks would be Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon, however, it is unlikely that he falls to the Jaguars. It is even more unlikely that Jaguars general manager Gene Smith decides to trade up for the second consecutive season to acquire a skill position player.

However, with the abundance of talent available at the wide receiver position in free agency it is likely that by the time the draft comes around in April receiver will no longer be the Jaguars top need.

Fortunately for the Jaguars there are other needs that could be targeted in the first round that would allow them to stick with their best available player strategy that they have employed during the Gene Smith era.

Perhaps the most attractive pick the Jaguars could make in April is North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples. Coples showed on Saturday in the Senior Bowl that he has the make-up to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL, something the Jaguars have been seeking for a long time.

The Jaguars could also address their need on the offensive line in the first round. They could select either Iowa’s Riley Reiff or Stanford’s Jonathan Martin to fill the massive need at right tackle. Eben Britton’s health is a major question and Guy Whimper was a swinging door last season, so the Jaguars could choose the sure up the position with an elite offensive tackle prospect to help keep Blaine Gabbert upright in 2012.

Unless the completely unexpected happens and either Justin Blackmon or LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne fall to the Jaguars at the seventh pick, I expect them to draft one of the three lineman I listed above.

Sure drafting a lineman for the third time in four years under Gene Smith is not going to rile up the fan base, but with the way the draft is starting to shape up it could be the best pick for the Jaguars.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio is no longer unemployed.

According to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN, Del Rio has been hired to be the new defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

The move make a bunch of sense considering before he became the boss of the Jaguars, Del Rio worked as a defensive coordinator under Broncos head coach John Fox with the Carolina Panthers. Fox, who is also a defensive minded coach, is obviously comfortable with Del Rio’s ability to coach defense.

Del Rio also did a majority of the defensive play calling for the Jaguars until he was stripped of that ability prior to the 2011 season.

Despite his new job, the Jaguars still owe Del Rio the $5 million balance that remained on his contract.

Jacksonville Jaguars middle linebacker Paul Posluszny staggered off of the field in obvious pain during the team’s season finale against the Indianapolis Colts, but until now it has been a mystery how extensive his injury was.

According to Tania Ganguli of The Florida Times-Union, Posluszny had surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder earlier this month.

Although the injury should not prevent Posluszny from missing any games in 2012, he will not be able to keep up his conditioning this off-season as he recovers from the surgery. Getting healthy will be his primary concern for him and the Jaguars over the break, as he has emerged as one of the leaders of the Jaguars re-tooled defense.

In his first season with the Jaguars, Posluszny racked up 192 tackles with two sacks and two interceptions.

Blaine Gabbert is the quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the needs to find a reliable backup quarterback that is capable of coming in and pushing their young signal caller for playing time.

Current Jaguars backup, Luke McCown, is a free agent, has been hailed as a great mentor for the young Gabbert, but as we found out early last season he is not much of an NFL quarterback. Gabbert does not need a mentor behind him on the depth chart, that is what the coaches are for. He needs someone behind him as young and hungry as he is so he has to earn the starting quarterback job.

That is why I think the Jaguars will use a late round draft pick in the upcoming draft to select another quarterback.

Sure the Jaguars could sign a backup in free agency, but none of the available quarterbacks that are worth signing would be willing to come into a situation where they would likely be the backup.

For the Jaguars, this may be the best year to target a quarterback in the later rounds of the draft. There are several late round quarterback prospects that have tons of college experience, but may be lacking in one of the measurables that is keeping their draft stock down.

Some late round prospects to keep an eye on are Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins, Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson, Boise State’s Kellen Moore, Southern Miss’ Austin Davis and San Diego State’s Ryan Lindley.

All of the guys listed above showed in college that they know how to play the quarterback position, but they may be a little short or may not have ideal arm strength. I think the Jaguars and Gabbert would benefit greatly from having one of these guys on the roster.

Jaguars special teams ace Montell Owens was added to the Pro Bowl roster Sunday evening to replace Patriots special team ace Matthew Slater, who will be playing in the Super Bowl instead.
