Nick Saban Has a Constructive Suggestion for Penn State

In the wake of the Penn State football scandal, everyone has one question on their minds:

What will be the punishment handed down to the Nittany Lions for the transgressions of Jerry Sandusky and those involved in covering them up?

Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban thinks the question instead should be what do Penn State and the NCAA want as an outcome.

While Saban isn’t always the most forthcoming with the press, instead preferring to keep what some believe to be an evil genius under wraps, he opened up some to a group of reporters at SEC Media Days in Atlanta this morning, suggesting:

I think that what we all should probably be thinking a little bit more about is what do we want to be the outcome of this? Something that’s a win-win type thing, for kids in the future, the people that are there now, the players that are there now.

Maybe they ought to tax all the tickets that they sell on athletics and give the proceeds to some child abuse organization. Or something like that, rather than worrying about some punishment that is really going to have no positive affect on anything.

Quote from NBC’s College Football Talk.

You know what, he has a point.

While Penn State must be punished in some form or fashion to maintain the integrity of the NCAA as a governing body, does the punishment have to be so severe as to permanently damage not only the reputation of a football program, but of the school as well, when taking a positive action such as that Saban mentions could instead be more beneficial in the long-term?

Incremental donations to an organization which protects children from the very situation that will be at the forefront of our collective consciousness for months– if not years, to come– truly is a win-win, regardless of how cliche that may seem.

It’s so easy for us all to focus on the negative, on punishment, and on punitive action in a situation which has already been punishing enough.

Why not think in terms of benefit instead?
