College Football: Five Star Focus Numbers 24-17
Darrin Kitchens - US PRESSWIRE

A three part series that takes a look into the 5 Star recruits and how they fared in their first season on campus.

Part 1 looks at recruits 17-24. This group was dominated by redshirted seasons, and no one really had a standout year. However, there are several candidates to have a breakout seaons. Look for LSU’s WR Jarvis Landry, and Florida QB Jeff Driskel to improve dramatically on their sub-par freshman campaigns.

24. OT Christian Westerman, Auburn

Season Stats: Redshirted

What he did: : Westerman picked the Tigers over Texas in heated battle for the big guy from Arizona. Split first team reps at Guard during the spring, and ended up second on the depth chart at LG. Redshirted after not seeing any playing time.

What to look for: Westerman was recruited as an OT but immediately found a spot inside at OG for the Tigers. Even though he redshirted, he traveled with the team all last season and is ready to step in and start at LG when the Tigers open up against Clemson.

23. LB Kris Frost, Auburn

Season Stats: Redshirted

What he did: Frost redshirted after injuring his shoulder in preseason practice.

What to look for: Stayed healthy this offseason and made huge strides in earning playing time this year. Is one of the more athletic LB’s on the Tigers defense and should open up second on the depth chart at OLB behind SR Jonny Evans.

22. WR Charone Peake, Clemson

Season Stats: 4 receptions, 71 yards

What he did: Peake battled shoulder injuries early on in the season and became buried on the depth chart. Played in 8 games and had a season best 2 catches against Auburn.

What to look for: Peake has the size that coaches love, but with Sammy Watkins, Jaron Brown, and DeAndre Hopkins (combined 185 catches, 21 tds) on the depth chart, Peake will be limited on his oppurtunities. Probably won’t see his full potential untill 2013 season, and will most likely earn his playing time on Special Teams once again

21. RB Demetrius Hart, Alabama

Season Stats: Redshirted

What he did: Forced to miss the season after tearing his ACL during the Summer

What to look for: Will most likey battle with Jalston Fowler (385 yards, 4 TD’s) and true Freshman TJ Yeldon as primary backup behind Eddie Lacy. Hart posses top-end speed and great hands. Will have a scat-back type roll and gives Alabama another weapon to work with out of the backfield

20. WR Jarvis Landry, LSU

Season Stats: 4 receptions, 43 yards

What he did: Landry appeared  in 14 games and started 1. Had only 1 catch after the September 15th game against Mississippi State. Made a mark on special teams however with 11 tackles and a punt return for 31 yards.

What to look for: Led the Tigers in the spring game with 6 catches for 120 yards. Should be the teams #3 WR to start behind Odell Beckham and Russell Shepard. Even though the Tigers are a run first team, I fully expect Landry to have a breakout season and only trail Beckham in catches by seasons end.

19. OLB Ishaq Williams, Notre Dame

Season Stats: 6 tackles

What he did: Williams never really earned solid playing time had a somewhat disappointing freshman season. He only tallied 6 tackles in 11 games while trying to find his role in the Notre Dame 3-4 Defense.

What to look for: Williams will have the chance to earn a starting job at OLB after an impressive offseason. He has the ability drop in coverage and get after the QB with his hand in the dirt. If he can put it all together, he could end up being one of the better pass rushers for the Irish.

18. RB Aaron Green, Nebraska

Season Stats: 105 yards on 24 carries, 3 TD’s

What he did: Played the 2011 season battling with Ameer Abdullah as the top backup for Rex Burkhead. Played in 11 games and had a career best 5-36 yards and a TD against Wyoming.

What to look for: Chose to transfer to TCU this offseason. Will have to sit 2012, but will have 3 years remaining of eligibility beginning in 2013 for the Horned Frogs.

17. QB Jeff Driskel, Florida

Season Stats: 16-34, 148 yards, 2 Interceptions

What he did: Saw action in 5 games as he battled Jacoby Brissett for Jeff Brantley’s backup. Saw his most action against Auburn where he went 9-18 for 75 yards. Failed to throw a Touchdown while tossing 2 picks.

What to look for: : The battle for the Gators starting QB job between Driskel and Brissett was not settled during the spring and will mostly likely continue into the 2012 campaign. “I would like to name a starter before the season but I’m not going to put a timetable on that” Said Muschamp. It’s quite possible that you could see a different QB starting for the Gators on a weekly basis.

Five Star Focus:  16-9 ¦ 8-1
