Flapjack Follies: Dustin Penner Injures Himself Eating Pancakes
Dustin Penner gets a lot of flack from not only the fans in Los Angeles, but across the NHL. And deservedly so.
Since being traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Kings, in what was expected to be a pretty big pickup for LA, Penner has contributed virtually nothing to the lineup.
But Penner’s latest injury, since he’s had a few since taking his ‘talents’ to the Staples Center, is low even by his standards. Apparently, Dustin Penner missed one game and was questionable for another because of an injury he suffered while eating a stack of pancakes.
Say what you want about Penner’s numbers, but it’s no secret that his weight has been the subject of great discussion this season. The 6’4″ 245 pound forward sat down to eat a big ol’ heap of flapjacks that his wife (apparently an enabler) had made when his back locked up.
A quote from Penner from LA Kings Insider:
“Apparently it’s one of those mysterious things, where you can throw it out (from) sneezing. I just leaned over to dip into some delicious pancakes that my wife made. It’s just like it [the pain] wraps around you and squeezes. … So it was disappointing. Hopefully it’s just an isolated incident, and not something that’s going to become chronic.”
This is the type of thing that leaves you speechless. Usually we leave the nonsensical injuries for the guys over in Major League Baseball, but Penner takes the cake, or the pancakes, over any sort of pillow-lifting or deer meat-related injuries.
The heavily (questionable word choice) scrutinized Penner has just eight points in 30 games for Los Angeles this season, who has been one of the more disappointing teams at the midway point of the season. The good news is that Penner is back in the lineup on Monday against the Washington Capitals.
But no matter what type of performance Penner musters up against the Caps, it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to shake the shame of “Aunt Jemima’s Revenge” any time soon.
